‘Simple Recipes’ by Madeleine Thien
Simple Recipes by Madeleine Thien is a collection of short stories written by the author. I personally think prose and short story books are underrated given the popularity of poem books, which I’m don’t hate if anything I love poem books too, but short story and prose for me have a deeper narrative to grasp. My favourite story in this book is the first story about food and a Malaysian immigrant family living in Canada. Just like the title implies, this story is simple, yet it touches on a lot of levels in storytelling; on the surface level it’s about cooking bringing a family together, on the other hand it’s also about having connection to origin roots and a glimpse into Asian family household with strict, humble parents raising kids who aren’t always going to be obedient towards them. I particularly love the part about the Asian way to cook rice; the piece of writing brought me a great sense of familiarity for me and I thought it was well done! For the other stories in this book, I thought they were also very well written. The stories dive into a lot of themes centred around love, family, trust, sadness, childhood, and Asian immigrant families. I like how these short stories are about love and not just one particular kind of love; there’s a reoccurring theme which implies that how we love is shaped by how we were loved by our parents in our childhood, and I like the conversations and stories that came out of this one message. Also, the writer is a Southeast Asian woman who’s killin’ the game! I love supporting and reading women of colour writers!
I give this book a rating of 10/10. Reading this book made me want to write short stories again, I miss creative writing! If you have any suggestions for good short story books please do let me know, I’m trying to expand my reading list for this category. I bought this book from Singapore; I absolutely love the bookstores in Singapore, and the bookstore I went to to get this book is BooksActually, I love the selection of books that they have and that they showcase Southeast Asian writers, if you’re ever in Singapore and happen to be a bookworm then you should definitely check out BooksActually in Tiong Bahru you won’t regret it!

“Once upon a time, there was a man as great as the gods… But even the great can tremble with fear. Even the great can fall” ― Mary E. Pearson, The Kiss of Deception . . I surprised myself with all books I read this month... did you have a good month of reading? . 🎧 (audio) Reached by Ally Condie ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎧 The Heart of Betrayal by Mary Pearson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎧 Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📖 City of Bones by Cassandra Clare ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📖 Rowan Wood Legends by Olivia Wildenstein ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎧 Three Dark Crowns Kendare Blake ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📖 The Waking Land by Callie Bates ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎧 The Beauty of Darkness by Mary Pearson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📖 Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📖 By Your Side by Kasie West ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ .
