CUM & SHO SUM LUV
Song of the Day: BOOKLUB - Western Hours "Listen, listen to it's coping power. You are this novelty"
N.B This track was song of the day for 25/04/2014
TALENT: BOOKLUB
TB: Introduce yourselves! Nic: Hi Iām Nic, I sing and play guitar. Ian: I am Ian. I sing and play sax and sometimes keyboard Simon L: Iām Simon (Lee). I play bass guitar Simon K: Iām the better Simon. I play drums Michael: I play guitar.
TB: How did you guys come together to start making music? Nic: Simon L and I began emailing each other music we were making and weĀ both ended up adding to the others material and began forming songs andĀ so we thought up the idea to form a band and introduce further critics andĀ musicians, Ian and Michael, who weād also been interested in working with forĀ a very long time. After writing too many parts for our first song āiiā we decidedĀ to bring in Simon Lās roommate, Simon K in order to perform live and nowĀ weāre one big happy library. Ian: Yeah. Nic and I wanted to sing together and make pop (the genre,Ā not āpopularā) music along the lines of Grimes and things. Then I joined himĀ and Simon Lee and Mike came too and we wrote things. Simon L: Yeah thatās pretty much how its started. Ahead of our first show weĀ realised it was silly to think we could survive playing with a loop pedal, so weĀ asked Simon K if he would join ā heās a multi-instrumentalist so it helped usĀ loads. Simon K: Yeah I basically saved the day Michael: Yup.
TB: How would you describe your music? Ian: Itās pop. Dreamy blown out indiscernible emotion music. Simon L: I donāt really know. It changed every time we play but it always has aĀ hazy pop foundation. TB: What are some of your influences/inspirations - musical or otherwiseĀ Most of the group have other projects going on - is Booklub a main focus orĀ more of a fun side project? Nic: Diiv, Wulyf, Nirvana & Talking heads. Ian: John Wizards, Blood Orange, Andre 3000, Beyonce, Frank Ocean,Ā Vampire Weekend, James Blake, Fleet Foxes, Phil Collins, Glenn Miller,Ā Steve Jobs, Odd Future, Charles and Ray Eames, SL, Vice, Pitchfork,Ā Soundcloud, high quality beautiful things. Booklub is a side project for me.Ā I run a creative collaborative with some amazing dudes and we are calledĀ naas (naas.co.za) and a magazine called PLATFORM (platformonline.co.za).Ā I used to be in another band, and Iām trying to start a solo Neo-soul/RnB/emotion project. Simon L:Ā As far as band influences go I think of Wu Lyf, Diiv, Foals. ButĀ personal inspiration comes from bands like BLK JKS, and the BrainfeederĀ dudes like FlyLo and Teebs. Michael: DāAngelo, The Drums, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Smiths, Roy Hargrove,Ā Alicia Keys, Mac Demarco and Esperanza Spalding. Iām finishing High schoolĀ so I guess itās a side project. TB: What do you hope people take away from your songs? Nic: I hope its gives people that happy exhausted feeling you get afterĀ swimming in the ocean all day. Ian: I hope people feel some emotions. Like, the best music in the world isĀ music that makes you feel emotions, so I hope that people fall into bliss or cryĀ or apologise to someone or turn their life around or dance alone or something,Ā something emotional. Michael: What Nic said.
TB: And finally, what are you listening to at the moment? What's on your iPodĀ (especially any guilty pleasures you don't like people knowing about)? Nic: Mac DeMarco ā Brother and Christopher Cross ā Ride like the wind Ian: Portishead, James Blake, John Wizards, Blood Orange, Frank Ocean. OnĀ repeat. Simon L: The new Teebs album Simon K: Rhye, Jungle, Junip, The National, Counting Crows. As for guiltyĀ pleasures: all the cheesy stuff from the early 2000s that my 10-year-old selfĀ loved⦠Smash Mouth, Crazy Town etc. Michael: Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Gregory Porter, Frank Ocean. Guilty pleasures: Katy Perry, King Krule and Martin Garrix. FIND BOOKLUB ON THEIR: YOUTUBE | FACEBOOK | TWITTER CHECK OUT MORE INTERVIEWS ON TWENTYBLISS
