"Following the broadcast of the NBC documentary, Wright quit his job at the all-white restaurant after being shunned by customers. He was severely pistol whipped by a policeman and his own restaurant, Booker's Place was firebombed. Wright was eventually murdered by an African American customer."

Some call me Booker. Some call me John. Some call me Jim. Some call me [-]. All that hate, but you have to smile. If you donât, "Whatâs wrong with you? Why are you not smiling? Get over there and get me so and so and so and so!" There are some nice people: "Donât talk to Booker like that. His name is Booker." Then I got some more people come in, real nice: "How you do, waiter? Whatâs your name?" Then I take care of some so good, and I keep that smile. Always learn to smile. The meaner the man be, the more you smileâalthough youâre crying on the inside.
This small quote, which aired on a NBC show was enough to get Booker Wright, a black waiter in Missippi was enough to get him fired, pistol whipped by white cops, his place fire bombed, and ultimately murdered. What freaks me out about this story is that there is nothing rebellious in what he said, it was only honest; and that this occurred in only 1965! My parents were alive when this level of racism was that prevalent.
But then, if you contrast this to the murders of two black men: Trayvon Martin, a teenager first stalked by the gun-wielding lunatic who wasn't even charged for the murder until a public outcry later; and Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr., a retired Marine who was tazered, handcuffed and shot by police officers who broke into his apartment when they were alerted that he might have had a heart problem; murders that have just happened in the last few months... maybe we haven't come as far as I thought.
