- at the climax/ending bit i think they all start hallucinating stuff and go into a race after it? they end up smearing some plant under their nose to counteract it

From what I can remember, it's a dystopian society where upon reaching a certain age, you go to get a tattoo with a number from one to 9 or 10 on the back of your neck. Usually, they're pretty decorative and tell everyone about what place you have life, the lower the number, the worse off you'll have it.

The main character is a young boy who was hoping to at least get a middle number, something like his father's. He and a friend went at the same time, and when it was his turn, he got a solid black 0 on the back of his neck.

I know he was rescued from the place before they could kill him, and there was a removal of a tracker of some sort. I also know he got his tattoo changed to either a 2 or 3, and there was a lady who wanted to give him a place to stay in a riverside inn but couldn't because he was just a little lower than the minimum. He was on a journey to figure out why the people who assigned the numbers gave him a 0 and then get revenge for the attempted murder of himself.

I know he made a new friend, a giant/half giant? I believe? Who came from a place that didn't have the number system, at least I don't recall if it did.

There was a cliffhanger at the end that I'm sure was leading up to the opening for another book, but I lost it before I could find out if there was a series.

I remember this book with a guy named Shay or some and he got in a boat with a vouch a people but something gone wrong and stuff happened

I only remember it because a girl character said "the shayola brand" and I remembered it again

It was about a family of four moving into a new house and the son quickly began to forget things about himself, from the fact that he was left-handed to the fact that he liked video games.

The older sister was very obviously concerned and told her parents, but they said that he was always like that. Her friends started to forget her brother's name, and one day her parents forgot about the brother entirely, telling the sister that she was an only child.

The brother went missing and soon after that, they forgot that the girl was their daughter, even calling the cops on her as an intruder. She managed to remind them of their family by shoving past them and grabbing a family photo and shoving it in their faces, screaming about being their daughter. The parents were confused but eventually remembered and waved off the officer who came to the door.

The brother was found in the basement, slowly being absorbed into a white mass on the wall. The whole family managed to drag him out, and things went back to normal. Until one of the neighbors called the sister by the wrong name. That's where the book ended.

I can't remember the name of it, but for some reason I woke up with the memory at the forefront of my mind. But I remember being disturbed and intrigued by it, unable to put it down when I had free time.
