Sandra Hüller added some much needed softness to Stratt's character in the movie. I think there is a tendency for strong woman in media to be completely devoid of emotion, but that's an unrealistic portrayal of what strength looks like in real life. Strong woman and people in general, still feel all the emotions others do! Movie!Stratt's actions don't differ from book!Stratt, yet Hüller is able to add layer upon layer to the character, allowing Stratt to be affected by the events and people around her. While restrained, movie!Stratt is able to convey her sadness, joy, and anguish during key moments, that I just didn't feel as strongly with book!Stratt. While both are excellent characters, Hüller's interpretation of her more empathetic, making her actions with Grace all the more painful.
