I just caught up on season 9. I cried. I’m happy I did. It was nice to be reminded how much I genuinely love this show. It has become something beautiful and this season is so odd, but in a goofy, progressive, new but mildly nostalgic way? I think Rick and Morty can be honestly be categorized into 4-3 “eras” or “divisions” of the show. Season 1 and 2 have a very similar “vibe” because the show was new and they were slowly growing their fanbase and the foundation of the show and how it would take off. Season 3 is a nice overlap into the taking off and firm establishing of lore and season 4 continues that and begins to break the 4th wall, do nods to the viewers, and honestly begins to capsulate the shows identity as a whole. Main characters personalities have been familiarized, along with side characters and celebrity cameos for quick stories/plots, and it focuses heavily on A and B plot written stories. (Though that writing style is still used in the show I don’t think it is done nearly as often as it used to be, I felt there would be so many times where the B plot was even funnier than the A plot). Basically seasons 3-4 I think is prime Rick and Morty before you reached the point of no return which is the time frame of seasons 5-6 where you literally couldn’t escape Rick and Morty it was EVERYWHERE. Now I still love these seasons, and the episodes I am most fond of are very strong but I think in these seasons they do too many nods to the viewers to the point it becomes too angst and condescending, really stepping into the “meta” aspects. (But do I care? No I miss this show so much and even the episodes that “aren’t my favorites” I still enjoy them) I honestly don’t have much to say about these seasons other than the citadel and evil Morty were the highlights of it, along with for me personally space Beth, I love sapphic horse girls and maybe project a little on to dreaming of a masc/butch space clone of myself finding me and falling in love. There is more to the season it’s just getting late and I still have so many thoughts but I think what makes this season stick out is that its heavily focused on the family and their interactions, obviously when portal travel is reset and evil Morty monologues and fucks off. This changes the next season and after as it settles back into the adventure/fam ratio evening out again. (Season 9 is less family more adventures) Now 7-8 are interesting because it’s post Roiland and right off the bat you have fans excited for the change and fans standing firm against the change, and the new voice actors had very big shoes to fill with their roles that season. Rick Prime and Diane- DIANE (DONT get me started I will schizo post about her eventually) not to mention you can see the growth and change in Rick these seasons, however I think this point is where the characters have become so established and loved that their actions and personalities have started to grow around what the audience has perceived them to be. Basically cannon character vs fannon oversimplified version, and fannon wins and cannon starts to take these traits and slowly become fannon. This I think is so prevalent in season 9 and it took me up until watching this new season to realize it but looking back at the previous 2 seasons it’s definitely been leading up to this point. I see it the most with Morty, I think almost all his maturing and accustoming to Rick and the adventures that had been established over the seasons has been slowly thrown away. Morty specifically this season has truly seemed practically useless to Rick which is so upsetting because it felt like he, though was a nuisance the majority of the time due to moral dilemmas that got in Rick’s works way, started to figure out his part and how to contribute to Rick, less sidekick more partner. I also really like Rick getting back into drinking as heavily because I think it’s going to lead to something bigger but this season so far has been very good. But nonetheless it’s much more mindful than the previous season. It said Iwrotetoomuchandtheservercantsaveitbyefornow
