Martyn was in his lap for all of two seconds before Martynâs hands on his shirt collar yanked him into a kiss. Of course, Ren went with it easily, closing his eyes and letting himself savor the taste of him.
Lord, Martyn kissed him like he was running out of time; Martyn kissed him like Ren was what made the Earth tick and the moon glow; Martyn kissed him like Renâs mouth was his to conquer. Renâs hands traced Martynâs sides down to his hips, his touch as light as an exhale, a sharp contrast to Martynâs winter-chapped lips and demanding tongue.
Martyn sat on the bed and stared intently at the first corner he could find.
Footsteps. âMartynââ
âClose the door, Tim.â
Click. The mattress dipped as Jimmy sat down beside him. âMartyn, look, Iââ Jimmy sighed. âJustâ whatâs up with you, man? Youâve been a right mess all season, you âave, and itâsâŚâ A creak as Jimmy shifted his weight. ââŚworrying. Iâm worried.â
Martyn chuckled, dismissive. That was the trick with Jimmy: laugh in his face and heâd splutter and wilt. âI know how to handle myselfââ
âStop that.â Jimmy did not splutter or wilt. Martyn smiled hollowly at the wall. âWe arenât playing these games of yours, Martyn, we arenât. Iâll have none of it.â It was cold in here. âOh, forâ look at me!â
Jimmyâs soft hazel eyes were all red and wrong. The timid tilt of his eyebrows were all wrong, too. Jimmy was upset with real anger.
âIâm a big boy, too big for babysitting,â Martyn laughed. âBig dogs, arenât we?â
âThereâs something wrong with you, Martyn.â
And well, that made Martyn really bark. âOh, God, unbelievable! Who would have thought?â
âNo, you absoluteâ I know you, Martyn,â Jimmy snapped. âIâve known youâ itâs been us before, remember? Youâve always beenâ smart, so clever itâs infuriating. You always won, always better than me, always bossing me around. You get what you want.â Oh, if only. âI knew you then, and I know you now, Morty.â
Huh.
I have a surprise for you, Mortyâ no, no, donât go inside yet! Happy 2018, Morty! Morty, we canât justâ we were gonna go grocery shopping today! Morty, whereâve you been? Wake up, Morty. Morty? Itâs seven in the morning, Morty, whereâre you going?
âYou havenât called me that in a long time,â Martyn mumbled. Itâd been so long, and Jimmy was still here.
âI know you,â Jimmy said, reaching out as if to shake Martyn by the shoulders before thinking better of it. âI know you, and I care. You wouldnât be stumbling around like an utter fool like this if something wasnât wrong. Talk to me, dude!â Martyn stared at him, his mouth set in a thin line.
Jimmy was still here, and Martyn wished so desperately that it was someone else in his place.
âYou really have to be more careful, Martyn,â Ren murmured. He stuck a plaster on Martynâs cheek. There was no need, really; the cut was so small it would have healed just fine on its own. Ren shouldnât have wasted their precious resources on him.
âYou worry too much for me, my liege,â Martyn scoffed. He brought a hand up to his face and rubbed a thumb over the foreign texture.
âI donât think I worry enough,â Ren told him. He laughed, then, that gentle sound. âIf I worried all day and all night, I still wouldnât be doing enough worrage.â
âWorrage?â Martyn laughed, too.
Jimmy tilted his head expectantly.
âWell?â
âTim,â Martyn said. âI might be the one to break your curse, I reckon.â

When handbuilding pottery, all sharp edges must be rounded before firing. One must take a serrated rib to scuff up the clay, and then a damp sponge to squeeze angles into smooth curves. The lip of a cup, or bowl, or vase, or the rim of a lidâ none of it can remain even remotely sharp. Glaze will not stick to sharp corners. If glaze is painted over a hard edge, it will run away from the edge when it melts in the kiln, leaving an ugly, naked line that exposes the bisque underneath.
The thing is, Martyn has been all angles his entire life.
His tongue is sharp, his eyes like a hawkâs, his posture rigid. He could halve fruit with his words, an opponentâs confidence with his gaze. Whispering footfalls may as well be ringing bells around him. Over the years, his acute corners have been whetted to be as thin as paper and as hard as diamond. Theyâve served him well.
Then thereâs Ren. Ren, with his sweetheart eyes and earthy voice and careful hands.
Martyn⌠doesnât know what to do with himself. Somehow, without Martynâs keen senses detecting a single thing amiss, Ren has managed to round every hard edge of his. What is he to do with all this softness? When Ren pulls him in by the waist, Martyn remembers how delicate his flesh truly is. When Ren kisses him, Martyn turns to slip. When Ren murmurs gentle things to him in the privacy of their shared bed, Martyn forgets how it feels to be sawtoothed. When Ren runs those warm palms over the crests and valleys of Martynâs body, Martyn thinks that heâs never been pointed at all, has he? Heâs all curve and squish under Renâs touch. What is he to do? What is he to do? Heâs useless, now; pliant, malleable. Bone-dry greenware dunked in water, turned tender and plastic.
Unfired glaze washes away easily with water. Itâs pastel when it dries, and has a powdery sort of feel to it. It liquifies in the kiln, and then hardens to dark glass. The colors of Renâs love stick to Martynâs smooth edges like melting glaze: hot and permanent.
Martyn realizes, curled up in Renâs arms with the rhythm of Renâs breathing steady against him, that heâs done for. Heâs completely and utterly fucking doomed. After all, he loves Ren more than anything in the universe.
treebarkweek day 3: puppies
âDâyou ever want kids?â Martyn asked one day, completely unprompted.
Ren blinked at him.
âUh,â he said. âWhy?â
Martyn looked away. âJust⌠just a thought. Iââ
Oh.
treebarkweek day 2: crown
Itâs a cold evening in Dogwarts as autumn sinks out of view. The evenings are only going to get colder, with winter on the horizon.
Well, not any old winter. Red Winter.
