Thinking a lot about Betty Grof, which I always am, but I’m thinking a lot about her while I start putting together my cosplay of her for Halloween.
I love her, I love the way she’s a woman of science in a kids cartoon, I love the way she’s written as logical to a fault. I love the depth that Fiona and Cake gives her outside of her relationship with Simon, obviously during AT her goal is to get Simon back, it consumes her entirely, so of course we don’t see a lot of her independent character and the parts we do see in Adventure Time are often her reflecting back with that inherent sadness that comes with looking back at pre-ice king Simon! But because we get Simon’s perspective on her in F&C, we get to see more of her reckless nature and the way it started as something as silly as spontaneously going on the trip for the Enchiridion to sacrificing her own mortality for the man she loved. Betty is such a creature of love and I truly like how little it clashes with her logical nature.
I’m never opposed to the dynamic of a character who’s logical to a fault and is just so distressed by the idea of love. But Betty embraces love as part of science, regardless of how weird Ooo is, she adapts, she learns, and she figures shit out! No matter how confusing Ooo must have been at first, the lack of the type of science she’d come to understand doesn’t hinder her.
I love her and Magic Man’s acquaintanceship! I think pairing her with the man who lost his girl to Golb *ages* before that ever ends up being a possibility with Betty is just such a good narrative choice.
Betty is a character that I’ve always felt very very connected with, she’s one of few characters on screen that I see so much of myself in.
