X-Ray Audio: The Documentary
You've probably already heard about bootlegged records of Western music in the Soviet Union between the 50s and 60s. Back then, music lovers cut Rock'n'Roll music into x-ray film and sold it on the black market.
Last year, there was an exhibition going on, a book was published and now a documentary by The Vinyl Factory and Antique Beat appeared on youtube.
The documentary gives some insight into the process of making those records and shows the protoganists talking about the risks in possessing or distributing them.
What I miss is the detail, the Fugitive Waves podcast mentioned: the KGB (Secret Service) started to pirate the pirates. After they seized their lathe cutting machines and sent their operators into prison, they started to flood the market with unplayable records in an efford to kill the demand. They also cut messages into the middle of the music recording, saying things like: "You like Rock'n'Roll? Fuck you anti-soviet slime!"
With that being said, be grateful for the easy access of music today and value the work of musicians!

Il y a quelques années, lors d’une tournée en Russie, Stephen Coates, leader du groupe The Real Tuesday Weld, découvre dans un marché aux puces un curieux objet : une sorte de disque vinyle, gravé sur une vieille radiographie. Une butin surprenant qui va l’amener à enquêter sur le monde fascinant des “bones”, des bootlegs dont l’origine remonte au milieu du XXème siècle…
