Summary: Some Bondown fluff concerning a cake and a messy kitchen, set pre-Japan

Notes: I wrote this a while back, during the whole Takahashi debacle I think. Just a bit of old fluff while I work on other things, since I haven’t posted writing in ages. Also, I think I will write all Mirrorshades fic titles in the form of clickbait articles.

The sword went down so quickly-as soon as he was released Breakdown rushed to BonBon’s side; as blood sprayed everywhere Breakdown took off his coat and wrapped the decker in it carefully. 

“This wasn’t supposed to happen this way”, he thought as he used all his strength to pick up BonBon in both of his arms, “I have to get her out of here.”

He started to walk away from the chaos towards the dock, he saw Nightsass disappear in a crowd of her fans and that Crusher was slowly following them. As his feet clacked on the pavement the reality of what had just happened washed over him…all those children dying…his friend’s injured…his life not lost…and for what?

Dying would’ve been simpler, hell, losing his hand was what he wanted! Why then was he carrying a teammate who, at any moment, could die from blood loss? He was charged to protect the team, to protect her, why then would she do something so stupid to herself to save something small like his hand? It didn’t make sense.

He could smell the salty air, they were close to safety-to escape. Looking down he saw BonBon, saw her hurt and vulnerable, at that moment her eyes were rolled back and resembled her hair, she kept coming in and out of delusion. Reaching the boat he laid her down gently and began to cast a healing spell on her, he had done it so many times before, so why was this spell so hard to cast?

He wanted this, he wanted to heal her desperately, so why was casting this taking so much out of him? His head began to swim and everything seemed intensified. As the smoke started circling BonBon all the memories they shared rushed him.

All of BonBon’s excited plan making…jacking into the matrix…the few nights he didn’t sleep in his car…getting Also…singing karaoke together…her saving his life time and again…hearing her say ‘my boyfriend’…her existence changing the very nature of who he was…But what had he given her? It seemed he was always on the receiving end, but what had he done for her?

All of these good things in the mess of this disgusting day. The buzz he had earlier left the minute he saw BonBon walk in for the exchange, he thought he was never going to see her or the team again. All that was left was confusion…and lives lost.

As the spell finished these feelings started to overwhelm Breakdown and he faltered into what was left of BonBon’s arms. Their faces were so close they almost touched, breathing heavily they looked into each other’s eyes for a moment and that’s when he knew.

He knew after this he could never let her go, that was what he could give her. Something so simple and complex as himself would be all he could give her. He wanted to kiss her, to let her know that she was cared for and would always be protected, that she would never have to hurt again…but the fire of bullets being drowned out by the crashing waves was too much, so he kissed her with his gaze as she said, “This isn’t exactly what I had planned for our first date.”

BonBon was pissed, determined, but pissed. After recovering slightly from the initial fight she composed herself. They had a deal and while she was deceiving them with a false deck, she had delivered on her end and they were about to take her man’s hand. Instantly she declared they take her hand instead and just as instantly her request was fulfilled and searing pain came over her as she began to go into shock from losing blood. The last thing she saw before passing out was Breakdown running towards her and wrapping her in one of his many coats.

She couldn’t really see or hear much but gunfire, yet she was able to feel Breakdown’s arms embrace her—the only thing she could focus on was how warm and safe she felt. She wasn’t able to tell how much time had passed as she kept drifting in and out of consciousness. She felt herself lowered to the ground and, even though normally magic was immediate and unnoticeable, there was something about the smoke sweeping across her skin, knowing it was his magic touching her that helped her regain composure and she slipped into a series of memories, all the time thinking of the Elven Shamen.

A normal day for the decker consisted of countless hours jacked into the matrix-away from anything resembling the real world. However, as she started to become closer to the team, to Breakdown, she started being present, as the leader of the group she had to be.

She doesn’t recall at what moment she fell for him, maybe it was just his caring nature, his loving of living, his freedom. She loved her father but he was never around, and her mom…well her mother was great if only a little too much to handle at times. And here she was, in shadowland, alone, and then so suddenly not. She had parents, but this was the first time she had a family.

BonBon made it her personal mission to take charge of the group, of her life. She finally didn’t care about the direction she was going as long as she was moving. Living seemed to suit her, loving even more so.

She started to remember all the things she had done for Breakdown and how they were not enough. Her caring for the elf got him into this mess and she would have him no other way than alive.

She realized just how much Breakdown had awoken in her, how much of her was fulfilled by him just existing and that was enough to be indebted to him. Sure she had done little things here and there to show she cared, but his life was now on the line because of her, she would not see this gentle soul suffer on account of her feelings for him.

She had not expected the plan to go how it turned out, but she didn’t care how dark it seemed, her world was illuminated by Breakdown.

Suddenly Breakdown fell into her arms looking dazed, their faces close enough to become one. She could barely keep her thoughts straight but all this pain was worth it for him. Their eyes were locked, passion and exhaustion claimed her and Breakdown sighed, “Your mom is going to kill me when she sees you don’t have a hand,” but BonBon didn’t care about her hand, just so long as his were intact to hold her.

Breakdown and BonBon sat next to each other, worn out from the drain and strain of their time apart. The boat began to leave the harbor and the subtle rocking was enough for the two love birds to be content with just being close to each other again. Their future may be uncertain, but they will live to love another day.
