Shane has only ever experienced two moments in her life where she swears time stood still. Once when she was five years old and she’d lost grip of the monkey bars, the other kids around her seeming to freeze as she caught sight of the fall below her.

“What scares you the most?” His voice is quiet, too quiet coming from Niall. 

Shane blinks. “Losing the people I love.” Niall considers this, nodding his head and dropping his gaze to his lap. Her words settle between them for a moment, along with the breeze and the fixed light of the moon, and then Shane adds, “Yeah, no that - that terrifies me actually.” 

Niall’s arm brushes against hers. It’s innocent and hopeful. “I’m one of those people, right?” 

“Don’t be silly,” she says, almost breathless, because in a world without Niall, her life would be dull and wrong. So, so wrong. Shane nudges him back a little harder, hopes it will tell him so much more than just a yes, always. “Of course you are.”

first and foremost, thank you to eriza (@booksncoffee​) for this ever so gorgeous banner. thank you to natasha (@wokeuptired​) for hosting a big bang over a year ago because without that, this would not exist. and thank you to every author of every fic i’ve read this year and the last, for y’all inspire me to keep writing!! 

At times I don’t expect it, but I still think about you, you know. You come to mind when my coworker tells me jokes that I know you’d laugh at, and I think of you on the rare occasion that my mom will make BLTs for dinner. I didn’t know that losing you would feel like losing myself, but if I could turn back time, redo every mistake and be better for you, I swear I would, Niall.

I wonder if I’ll see you one day and everything will fall into place again. Hope you're doing okay.
