Stefan sat at his stool in the science classroom, looking around at his classmates to find they already had partners. Except for one. Kira sat in the far corner of the room, her chair angled away from her neighbour as she leaned over her assignment sheet, reading intently. He approached her, finding it easier to talk to other Abnegation people than the other factions, he gave her a warm smile. "Wanna be partners?"

Matt stared at the paper in front of him. He swallowed a couple of times and sighed again. He didn’t really like this exercise. He had left Abnegation behind for a reason. He wasn’t interested in writing down why. He wasn’t interested in writing about Abnegation at all.
“Dear transfers: Write about your former faction, why you transferred and interview someone who is in that faction now.”
Matt looked around. His eyes resting on Elena a little bit longer than on anyone else. She’d probably expect him to come to her, but he didn’t know if that was a good idea. Not now their friendship was back on track.Â
“Kira?” Matt stood up and walked towards the girl he had seen so often, but had never really talked to. “Is it okay if I’ll interview you for this?” He lifted the paper and forced himself to smile.
Elena slid her final bobby pin into place. There, everything was perfect. So often her hair came loose of its tight bun, so today she had made sure to fasten it back. She wore a long, loose, grey dress with no adornment other than a simple watch on her wrist. She was tidy, practical and above all, completely ordinary.
Today she was going to be a good Abnegation; she would bow her head and smile, she would serve others and not herself. She wouldn't run or yell, she wouldn't long for a glimpse of her reflection, or for a splattering of colour. She was grey and sombre and content.
"I will be my undoing If I become my obsession," she whispered. Elena smoothed down her dress and fixed her smile back into place. "I will forget the ones I love If I do not serve them," she said more confidently.
She was going to help Kira today and that was all that mattered, not the aching in her chest or the burning in her throat. "I will war with others If I refuse to see them." Her smile would be convincing; she would tell everyone that was fine just as she always did, and she would pray that one day it would be true. "Therefore I choose to turn away from my reflection, to rely not on myself but on my brothers and sisters."
As Elena left her home to meet Kira at the High School, a strand of hair had already become free.

Congratulations goes to Rachel for getting the role of the lovely Kira Yukimura! We absolutely loved your sample and how you managed to include both Kira's (at first) unquestioning loyalty towards her family, and her need to help absolutely everyone even if it goes past the teachings of her Abnegation upbringing. I can honestly say that we're all looking forward to seeing you bring her to life and can't wait to see where you take her. From here you just need to follow this checklist and send in your account, and welcome to Blood over Faction!

IN CHARACTER ;
PREFERREDÂ CHARACTER:Â Kira
THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE CHARACTER:Â Sheltered, introverted, soft-spoken
PARA SAMPLE:Â
"Mom! Dad!" Screams made inaudible by the cries of her faction, by gunshots, by the thundering sound of perfectly aligned footsteps marching towards her. Searching back, Kira couldn’t remember a single time in her life when her voice reached such a pitch. Screaming did not fit into the selfless lifestyle of the Abnegation.Â
Before the attack, Kira rarely heard anyone scream. The occasional child, having fallen and scraped their knees and the Dauntless during the choosing ceremony were the extent of her experience with such acts. Now, she couldn’t get the screaming out of her head. She could have helped save Mr. McNabb from down the street, or Mrs. Prior from a few blocks away, if only she had been prepared. She adored Abnegation, she believed in their way of life, but she could not agree that being able to defend her faction from aggressors was selfish. It was clear that the Dauntless were not as dependable as everyone once claimed, and Abnegation needed someone to depend on. They could not afford to lose as many as they did during the attack. The school bell rang, jolting Kira from her thoughts.Â
"Al- Allison!" Kira closed her notebook shut, quickly grabbing her things and following the Dauntless girl out of the classroom. They’d barely known one another for a week, but the few times the two had conversed were enough for Kira to know that Allison was special. The stark difference between Allison and her factionmates made Kira feel like she could trust the girl- like she could reach out to her.Â
"Do you- um- want to maybe-" She bit her lip, unused to approaching anyone with request for help. She’d been raised to be the one who did the helping, not the one who needed the help. "Could you perhaps teach me how to fight?" Her words were calm, surprisingly stern.Â
"If it’s not an inconvenience," she added, realizing a bit too late that it may be selfish to take up the time of a stranger to learn to defend herself and others.Â
Three weeks later, Kira found herself frozen in the school locker room and starring at a set of work out clothes Allison had given her earlier that week. Her Abnegation clothing was proving impossible to train in, long skirts constantly tangling around her legs, tripping her up. Her hands shook visibly as she removed layer after layer of grey. She’d never worn colored anything, much less something that fit her form. Vanity was selfish, drawing attention to oneself because of their attire was selfish, having an unnecessary set of clothing when others had none was selfish. She couldn’t get her parent’s voices out of her head. Selfishness was prohibited. Did it make her less Abegation, her desire to learn self-defense? She wasn’t holding a gun or getting tattoos, so was it wrong? If it wasn’t wrong, why hadn’t she told her parents the truth about what she was doing after school?Â
She couldn’t give up now.
Perhaps some things were worth being selfish for.Â
Kira slid her legs through the tight (but surprisingly comfortable) black pants, determined to learn a new form of selflessness.Â
