Body Extension Project
Final Update/Reflection
I really appreciated all the comments during the critique and I thought this project overall was incredibly fascinating. As a group, we first began brainstorming by creating a word map and jotting down notes about concepts, themes, ideas, and contexts that we recognized throughout This is Not a Poem. The three main themes we decided to emphasize was deconstruction, reconstruction, and cycles, and the ways in which these concepts relate to connectivity-whether that be with objects or actual people. Each group member during the performance began at a certain location and after running out of string retreated back to their original space. After we created a massive web that connected all the students at different levels of their body, we allowed the class to figure out how they should continue further. After everyone had entangled themselves and left, there was a massive amount of entangled string left on the floor that displayed the activity and human interconnection that had happened in that space. It was also representative of the cyclical nature of reconstruction and deconstruction and how it allows for unique opportunities.
The body extensions all went through many different stages and as we were constructing our works we collaborated really well with one another to upgrade our individual pieces. What I found most interesting about this project is how the themes we distinctly recognized in both of the poems were not only represented through our final performance but through the physical process of creating the body extensions. We reconstructed and deconstructed each extension and the mechanics of creating our pieces were incredibly repetitive and cyclical. In the same way, we wanted to emphasize human connection we related to one another while we were working through collaboration and communication. Overall, I think this project was incredibly interesting and although it seemed as if we were limited due to our materials, that in itself allowed for opportunities and the construction of something even greater.

My pieces of our body extensions project
We each had a “puzzle piece” of a whole logo of a social media platform created from layers of laser-cut cardboard pieces. There was a lot of play in making sure the pieces looked very ambiguous difficult to guess what they would form. Each piece was essential in emphasizing how we can “connect” but not truly connect through social media, inspired by Ian Bigelow’s poem This is not a poem and René Magritte’s This Is Not a Pipe.
Worn body extensions
Although I’m just standing straight up with a simple pose, each extension had to be connected to other members of the group by contorting our bodies during our Twistagrambookchat presentation. There was a big factor of failure because we put each extension without thinking too much of how exactly each piece would connect and just how much we would have to twist and contort to connect to each other. This adds a layer of how there is failure in trying to connect with people on social media. To connect, but not really connect.
