Reading Bobby Ryan’s Player’s Tribune article “Dear Mom” and sobbing my eyes out. His childhood and life has been so tragic and to see him work through that and get to a better place genuinely is so nice. To grow up the way he did and make it through is a miracle. His dad was charged with attempted murder for almost beating his mom to death, then he skipped out on bail and their family crossed the border and changed their last name as Bobby played hockey. His dad was finally caught and arrested years later and his mom was just a rockstar who took care of everything and worked multiple jobs so he could be a hockey player. And he always wanted to take care of her in turn and she died of cancer years ago and he wrote “dear mom” thanking her for everything.
“that’s going to be a meme for sure.”
Congratulations to Oskar Lindblom for Winning the Masterton Trophy

I know there’s not many Sens fans on here, but Bobby Ryan just got a hat trick in his first game back after being in the NHLPA player assistance program for struggles with alcohol. He got a standing ovation and it’s really, really emotional.
the masterton trophy has really wonderful intentions but in practice it becomes this weird competition where hockey writers get to decide which players suffered the most/best and then the “winner” has to talk about their incredibly personal experience on stage in front of their peers and the speech is broadcast internationally
like, if ryan or lindholm or johns specifically said, “hey, i’d like to make a speech at the nhl awards to talk about my journey,” that would be really cool and i hope they would be given that opportunity but voting on which one of them has to do it when it seems like none of them necessarily want to is bizarre. each of them faced incredibly personal challenges and no one is entitled to details about their hardships
