everything i love about bastogne!
i love that we have an entire episode dedicated to how great eugene roe is.
the fact that itâs quiet enough at the beginning that we can hear the sound of walking over the snow.
winters trying to shave in that frozen hell + arresting that german soldier with shaving cream still on his face.
the episode is so devoid of colour that winterâs doesnt look ginger :( though we can always see the color of blood, of course.
sleepy and probably hungover nixon appears out of nowhere. classic.
gene almost spraining his ankle.
that shot of gene looking at the morphine!
âtwo medics in one hole?!â dude, they are friends.
seriously lost count over how many times eugene says âscissusâ in the first twenty minutes of this get the guy some goDDAMNED SCISSORS.
the absolute fatigue in liptonâs face when he has to show lieutenant dike where his foxhole is + also, how the fuck does dike not know where his foxhole is thatâs literally his nickname.
âthe hell with the leg, i'm pissing needlesâ poor bill spends the whole episode with a peeing problem.
gordonâs âscissors? well, let's see, i'll have to check the sewing room. might be upstairs in the study. that skinny old drawer in the middle of the deskâ.
gene i know itâs your job but how can you just be running around during a shelling.
roe literally falling on top of babe and julian (+ babeâs accent !!! i will never get tired of repeating it).
babe and spinaâs conversation while trying to go for more supplies (âthe replacement in my foxhole, julian. goddamn virgin. just a kid. the only virgin i know is the virgin maryâ + babe falling into a german trench and chuckling, that little freak).
only two medics for the entire company is insane btw.
the fellas joking around in dinner time (ânothing you won't eat, malarkeyâ / âi won't eat malarkeyâ + âanybody seen lieutenant dike?â / âtry battalion cp, sirâ / âtry parisâ / âtry hinkleâ + the imitation of german accents) + gene watching from a safe distance.
the way dike is leaning with his arms crossed in his foxhole pffttt
the infamous âgene, what's with the heffron bullshit, huh? you know my name, why donâtcha use it?â / âit's edward, right?â / âedward, are you serious? only the goddamn nuns call me edwardâ
âtoye, you missing something?â / âhomeâ (and that nasty stare mcclung gets when he exposes him) + âwhere are your boots?â / âin washington, up general taylorâs assâ... joe toye i love you do you hear me?
âfrank, you keep cleaning those teeth, the germans will see you from a mile away. shot him deadâ i seriously never noticed how much perconte cleans his teeth (this scene is just the beginning) + perconteâs indignation when roe steals his scissors.
billâs âmarlene, is that you?â. are you okay, dude.
liebgott and alley singing a christmas song. in a foxhole. at night. in the middle of the battle of the ardenes.
bill not understanding gene when he uses a french word to refer to his thing.
eugene praying (specifically the st. francis prayer! + the fact that he repeats âwith all my heartâ twice).
that yell for medic when the screen is dark????? cinema.
skinny gets hit and perconte complains about getting blood all over his trousers (âiâm real sorry, frank!â).Â
âiâm in heaven, docâ
roe and renee bonding in french (+ one of the few scenes where roe genuinely smiles). itâs so sweet but also so sad how they have to part ways so quickly. and the chocolate?????
âthatâs it, guys, nothing more to worry about. weâre gonna die now, weâre gonna die in a state of graceâ skip you will be missed.
georgeâs âthat asshole couldnât find a snowball in a blizzardâ about peacockâŠ
first instances of how the war is affecting gene (numbness and paralisis) when we see him sitting on that tree. always waiting for somethingâŠ
the idea of babe, who was introduced as a replacement like two episodes ago (a few months in real time), having to mentor and lose an ever greener replacement like all the other veterans that had mentored him⊠a never ending cicle.
winters sitting with the guys when they are all down because of julianâs death.
that look babe sends to roe⊠#whatthatmean. does he resent him for not being able to save him? does he understand by heâs always so distant with them? a little bit of both?
also, gene thinks about giving him the chocolate immediately! he basically spends the rest of the day looking for babe to give it to him.
so he canât find babe âcause he isnât in his hole? we know heâs with spine, so does that mean babe went there looking for him too? much to think about.
the soft âgot yaâ when he finally finds him + âi promised him, if he got hit, i'd get his stuff and bring it to his ma, you know? now the fucking krauts'll strip himâ / âitâs okayâ / âitâs not! itâs not okayâ
gene smiling softly when talking about traiteurs and his grandmother + spinaâs âiâve had enough of playing doctorâ.... spina asks him about it but he doesnât answer (itâs amazing how little he lets us see inside his mind!).
the smiles when the supplies arrive.
how much of a nerd am i when i recognize that they also filmed a scene from les mis in that chappel?
roe and renee talking after they couldnât save that guy (the chocolate, the hands, âi never want to treat another wounded man again. i'd rather work in a butcher's shopâ, âno, itâs not a gift. god would never give such a painful thingâ).
buck talking about legionaries and visigoths to gonorrea and babe (âso, what's college like, buck? you can study with all the cheerleaders running fingers through your hair?â / âhell, babe, i can't even rememberâ).
babe being amused that gene called him âedwardâ (+ the idea that doc refuses to use nicknames as a way of distancing himself from the men).
that rushed breath when smokey gets hit? + the fact that it takes a while for gene to react and help smokey (spina almost has to shake him out of it).
âhe's paralyzed. can't feel a thingâ... something about only being able to understand a bit of what geneâs feeling through his diagnosis of a patient (his numbness = smokeyâs âcanât feel a thing)...
renée appearing in the light like an angel. understanding gene without him having to say a word.
babe getting some food for eugene.
winters looking out for gene.
âto the german commander: nuts!â, which everyone but gene finds funny.
malarkâs âmerry christmas, fellas. you gotta thank jolly old saint luzâ + penkalaâs âiâm shaking so goddamn much, i feel like iâm dancing!â
âa dell? like where fairies and gnomes live?â
âokay, get up. not okay, lie downâ.
the m gene marks in welshâ forehead (to indicate heâs had morphine) resembles the gesture of that priest from a previous scene! simbolism. whatever.
gene leaning over harryâs body to protect him from the shelling (an apparent improvisation from the actor!).
finding renĂ©eâs head piece in the ruins.
the final scene (the best scene in the whole episode? yes): âyou called me âbabeâ!â, babe imitating roeâs lousiana accent, âheffron, watch the goddamn lineâ, the sun is finally out, the camera pans towards the blood covered snow ahead⊠masterpiece !
are they⊠you know⊠foxhole buddies?
no because what i love about this episode is thats so structurally sound: geneâs arch towards numbness interrupted by renĂ©e (a sort of angel-like figure), who offers him a tentative contact with human connection in the middle of the war (which gene has been depriving himself of because he doesnât want to get too attached to his potential patiens) that ends up culminating with babe (gene literaly uses renĂ©eâs hanky to heal babe! and itâs the use of his nickname that gets babe out of his own small numbness!). perhaps it was precisely renĂ©eâs death that made gene take a step towards babe.Â
BUT WHO CARES. I DON'T. IâM NOT CRYING.
anyway gene and babe and renée as a golden trio is one for the ages.
âno memeber of the 101st has ever agreed that the division needed to be rescuedâ
i remember reading something the real bill guarnere said to his son to make him understand what was the situation in bastogne: he showed him a photo of a baseball game and pointed at the public, âthat was the germansâ, and then at the players, âand that was easy companyâ...
Gene's little "no, I don't recall" after Babe yells at him about the morphine has me in a chokehold... he's so stressed out he's just trying to do his best but the days start blending into each other and he's asked everyone at least once for morphine and he's running around in circles trying to keep everyone alive but there's so much blood so much death and there are these blank spots where his memories should be and he so desperately needs someone, anyone, to hold him up but at the same time he can't let anyone get close because what if they get hit what if they die and he can't do his duty the way he's supposed to, what if he fails them and they die because he got too close
Ron Livingston's Video Diary take away- Lewis Nixon did NOT want him to record that phone call with Dick Winters about him. Sure, blah blah, recording device, backfeed, ghosts? come on, etc....me: Sir, that man is fine with Dick and Grace talking about him but he knew Dick Winters was going to impress upon you the importance of immortalizing his best friend and that shit did not need to be recorded. Especially when it got this reaction:

literally.......... perfectly sculpted............... most impressive eyebrown
fuck it, everything i like about currahee:
gene is the first closeup!!! the star of the show!!! and of my heart.
i like those shots of soldiers looking directly at the camera, as if imitating some found footage of the actual days before the big jump.
winters and nix conversation (âcivilized place for civilized menâ / âshouldâve been born earlier, nix.â / âwhat, and give up all this? we'll go to chicago. I'll take you thereâ⊠are you kiDDING me how can you not interpret this as they are in love).
private bullshit.
you can see fucking gonorreaâs penguin walk during one of their marches jsajshah (apparently a philly thing, to avoid falling when the floor is icy! details!).
âsobel does not hate easy company, private randleman. he just hates youâ and luz's smirk.
âitâs a can of peaches, sirâ and winters trying not to smirk.
âi like spaghetti :)â
perconte shitting on said spaghetti (or âarmy noodle with ketchupâ, as he calls it).
sobel telling hoobler to pack up his ears and go home.
âwe fall upon the risers, we fall upon the grass, / we never land upon our feet, we always hit our ass. / highty, tighty, christ almighty, who the hell are we? / zim zam, goddamn, we're airborne infantry!â
toye and luz homoerotic exchange, setting the tone for the rest of the series (if nixon and winters werenât enough).
whenever sobel is behaving pathetically incompetent i just see ross from friends. itâs hilarious. also: toyeâs, lipâs and eugeneâs disappointing stares HSAJSJ.
âno flaws, no vices, no sense of humorâ (the eyesâŠ).
liebgott âjokinglyâ threatening to kill sobel with a hand grenade jesus christ this guy. + ââcause the army wouldnât make a mistake, right, shift?â
âgoing my way?â (the whole conversation... are you kiDDING me, pt. 2). âsince when do i drink?â and that stare⊠winters, control yourself.
that scene in the ship (âreally, its hot in africa?â / âshad apâ) which i know by heart for no reason.
george pretending to be major horton and messing with sobel (+ tipperâs knowing smirk!).
that post that said that only ones playing basketball were american actors because all the british ones sucked at it.
you just gotta love lip. heâs just so lip from he beginning: caring about his soldiers, teaching them stuff, organizing a mutiny... typical lip stuff.
anyway itâs also so heartwarming how everyone is immediately loyal to winters from the very start.
british people causaly committing a war crime (wearing the enemyâs uniform).
hoobs and the tommie not understanding each other, and him almost stealing the lugger (and the foreshadowingâŠ. shut up im fine).
âare you ticked because they LIKE me?!â
nixon using every chance he gets to show off everything he learned at yale (read: correct pronuntiation of french towns).Â
toye spitting fire for 40 seconds (âi could use some brass knucklesâ).
itâs hilarious that talbertâs birthplace is kokomo, because he would absolutely be the sort of guy to rock to kokomo by the beach boys.
itâs devastating whenever luz stops joking around to be serious (we see more of that starting from episode seven but still!).
the way martin choses to tell guarnere about his brother without actually having to speak with him, my brother in christ, dude. like, where's the tact.
that passive aggressive cunt that shushes guarnere while watching the movie. love him.
again with those found footage shots! love them.
doc eugene roe looking absolutely handsome as hell before getting on that damned plane (+ all those little shots when he appears in the background looking somewhat mentally stable, thatâs always nice).
fuck it, everything i like about day of days:
guarnere praying with the rosary beads and looking straight to the camera ????
winters trying to make little hot priest laugh cause he is scared + âwe are not lost, private. weâre in normandyâ.
âwhat's that guy's problem?â / âgonorrhea.â / âreally?â / âhis name, dummy, guarnere, gonorrhea, get it?â.
the winters and guarnere beef + toye killing the horse cause he's a good guy (sort of).
malarkeyâs such a nice guy he can become best friends with a pow.
first thing spiers ever does in the series is steal a pack of cigs from buck, second thing he does is comit a war crime. because of course.
popeye getting hit in the ass thus starting the tradition of easy company giâs getting hit on the ass (+ buckâs âin the ass!?â in that fucking transatlantic accent).
toye survives TWO fucking granades (âfucking twiceâ).
someone give compton some brown lenses jesus christ almighty.
toye got some brass knuckles in the end !!! what a guy.
malark risks his fucking life like an idiot for a luger for his kid brother (+ lieb cursing in the background, ânow you stop firing? beautifulâ).
âshut your f*cking guinea trap, gonorrhea.â / âhe's all right, that kidâ... im going to cry.
poor lipton (whose job was to tnt the shit out of the machine guns) gets there late every single time.
spiers appears out of nowhere and takes the third and last machine like a madman (foreshadowing for what he does in foy, if you think about it).
âgoing my way?â pt. 2 + nix and winters glad of seeing each other i will pass out.
soldiers smoking and leaning on a world war one memorialâŠ
the guys cooking inside the car-thing (buck doesnât trust malark cause heâs irish + âsir, if you have a reservation someplace else, iâll be glad to join yaâ + winters and guarnere make up like men (read: without talking) + winters drinking for the first time + âoh, and sargent? iâm not a quakerâ and guarnereâs laugh).
nix opens the can for winters after he struggles to open it up, and winters gives it back to him cause heâs ânot hungryâ + nix watches him walk away. like, #whatthatmean.
wintersâ âthat night i took time to thank god for seeing me through that day of days and prayed i would make it through d plus one. and if, somehow, i managed to get home again i promised god and myself that i would find a quiet piece of land someplace i and spend the rest of my life in peace.â while watching the bombing in the distance.
