Peter Nureyev opens up a coffee shop. Pete's coffee
This is actually not my first coffee shop AU. That would be over here.
Itâs one thing for Rita to come into the office bouncing on her heels at a mile a minute. That could mean anythingâ maybe she got a new computer, or she waved at a celebrity on the street, or they just announced another movie marathon for her to binge on.Â
Two things set this apart from every other day, though.
First, she hasnât rambled to him about every tiny detail of the thing. And second, it lasts more than a day. Or two. Or three.
Juno tells himself that he doesnât want to know. If it matters, Rita will tell him on her own time. Heâs got work to do.
Itâs damn hard to focus when she keeps giggling like that, though.
The first real clue drops into his lap almost a week later, when he comes to work with a hangover and Rita comes in vibrating so hard the screws are starting to come out of her chair.Â
He sighs. âWhat, did they open a new coffee shop or something?â
Heâs pretty sure the squeak she makes isnât supposed to be an answer, but he takes it as one anyway. Yes, thereâs a new coffee shop, but heâs not supposed to know about it.Â
Kind of a weird secret to keep from him, but heâs not going to push it. For all he knows, Ritaâs got a crush on the barista or something. It doesnât sound dangerous, and that means heâs too hungover to care.
He knows thereâs a problem when Rita starts coming in late to work. She doesnât even have the decency to be frazzled about itâ she just keeps being giddy and giggly, and it is too goddamn early in the morning for this. When he finally gives in and asks her, her drawn-out giggles and singsong âoh, no reason,â are too obnoxious to stand.Â
And it just keeps getting worse.
Itâs been going for nearly two weeks when she comes in so flushed it looks like sheâs been running. He canât even worry about her safety because she takes one look at him and bursts into a throaty giggle so intense that it triggers a coughing fit.
âGoddammit, Rita,â he snaps once heâs gotten some water in her. âIâm not paying you to come in late and moon over your crush all day. Justââ Goddammit, the last thing he needs is to get involved in Ritaâs love life. âJust tell them how you feel already so you can move on or whatever, okay?â
Even worse: that just makes Rita giggle harder.
âOh, I ainât the one with the crush,â she tells him in that same goddamn singsong. âItâs a friend of mine. But heâs got it bad, Mista Steel. Real bad.â
âThen tell him to spit it out already,â Juno snaps, and he storms back into his own office, accompanied by the sound of Ritaâs laughter.
When Juno wakes up that morning, itâs to the staccato beat of Ritaâs fist on his door.Â
Not his apartment door, mind you. His bedroom door.
âRise and shine, boss! Ainât it a great morning? Just a perfect day to get some breakfast together, whadya say? My treat.â
âRita?â He tries to prop himself up but misses the edge of the mattress, nearly falling out of bed entirely. Goddammit, did he even remember to wear pajamas last night? âWhat the hell?â
âCome ooooon,â she croons, rattling the door. âCome on, come on, come on! We gotta goooooo!âÂ
âI swear if you come in here Iâm throwing my clock at you.â Not for the first time, Juno regrets letting her install the digital locks on his apartment. He yanks on a pair of socks and the first pair of pants that isnât entirely bloodstained, and throws a shirt on for good measure.
Heâs barely got the door open before Rita throws his shoes and holster at him.
âHereâs your stuff now letâs go already!â
âJesus,â Juno mutters. âHow much coffee have you had?â
âNone!â Her voice is just shy of supersonic. âThatâs the whole problem!â
Suddenly Juno plants his feet. âWait. Is this about your barista friend?â
âWellâŚâ She draws the word out too long to be comfortable. âI told him what you said to me, but he didnât believe me. But I figure you know what youâre talkinâ about, so if he heard it cominâ from youâŚâ
Juno would scrub a hand down his face, but one hand is holding a blaster and the other oneâs got a shoe in it. âYouâre never actually going to leave me alone about this?â
âNot until you come talk to him.â She looks so proud of herself.Â
Well, heâs already up and dressed. Might as well get breakfast in him, especially if this finally cures Rita of her caffeine habit. âFine. Whatever. But youâre buying.âÂ
By the time Rita parks the car, Junoâs having some serious second thoughts. Ritaâs giddy enough that she really doesnât need any more caffeine in herâ half a cup of coffee and she might vibrate right through the floor.Â
âOkay, so hereâs the plan,â she says in that gruff voice that she uses when sheâs playing private eye. âIâll go in first and get him alone, and then you come in after me. That way he canât make a break for it.â
âWait, did you actually tell him I was coming?â Juno starts after her. âRita!âÂ
But itâs too late. Sheâs already traipsing through the doors.
Juno grates out a sigh and wanders after her, ignoring the stupid plan. Besides, this isnât the kind of establishment he wants to leave Rita alone in. The fixtures of the place are too generic, the tables are nearly identical to three other shops heâs been in, and despite this being the middle of the breakfast rush, the dining room is empty.
âCoffee shop my ass,â he mutters under his breath. âThis is obviously a money laundering operation. Iâm surprised they even sell⌠coffee.âÂ
And then Rita steps aside, and sheâs no longer blocking his view of the barista, and the world slows down.
Heâs standing on the other side of the counter, tall and graceful even in that ridiculous generic apron with some stupid fake name scribbled on the nametag, his shirt sleeves rolled elegantly up to his elbows. The thick frames of his glasses canât quite hide the surprise in his eyes.Â
Rita giggles. âHow about I give you two some privacy?â
At least, thatâs what Juno thinks she said, but right now itâs hard to focus on anything but Peter Nureyev.Â
âHello, Juno.â His voice is soft and even.Â
And Juno⌠Juno has no words to offer him, except, âYouâre here.â
âI am.â
âYou said you were leaving Mars for good.â
Nureyevâs lips press into a thin, sad smile. âApparently we both said things we didnât mean.â
The reminder hits Juno square in the gut, and suddenly heâs reliving all his broken promises, all his lies, all the stupid things he said, all the things he ruined. What is he doing here? What was he thinking, talking to him?
âI should go,â he says hastily, and he turns around, striding to the door as fast as his legs can carry him.
Rita, as it turns out, is even faster. Just as Juno reaches for the door, she throws herself into his path.Â
âOh no you donât!â She grabs him by the shoulders and bodily turns him around, and Juno remembers suddenly how strong Rita is when she means to be.Â
âRitaââÂ
âDonât blow this, boss!â Rita hisses, and marches Juno back up to the counter. She flashes Nureyev a smile. âDonât mind me, Agent Glass. Just pretend Iâm not even here. You two just go back to what you were talkinâ about.â
Nureyev offers her a bemused smile before he turns his attention back to Juno. âI believe you were about to leave.â Juno can hear the empty space where Nureyev wants to say âagainâ.Â
âListen,â Juno says too quickly. âThat wasââ He wants to call it a mistake, but it wasnât. Not really. Not the way he wishes it was. He lowers his voice. âThat was pretty messed up.â
âThatâs certainly one way of putting it,â Nureyev says evenly.Â
âListen, I shouldnât have done what I did. The way I did. I shouldnât haveâŚâ Juno wants to look away, but Nureyev deserves better than that, so Juno stuffs his hands into his pockets and just spits it out already. âLeaving Mars wasnât an option for me. I donât think it ever will be.â
âYou could have said that.â
âI know.â Thereâs a lump in Junoâs throat. âThereâs a lot I should have said. A lot I should have done differently. I keep going over that night, and I keep thinkingââ
Thereâs a light clatter and the suction sound of a door being opened, followed by a louder, much more violent crash. Nureyev leans over to get a better view, and Juno twists to do the same. A young couple is standing in the doorway, looking bewildered and a little bit horrified as Rita shoves the door shut on them. The table by the window is still wobbling, and the chair where she must have been sitting is now overturned, still rocking gently. She must have leaped out of her seat to bar the door.Â
âBeat it!â she cries. âWeâre closed!â
âBut the signââ says one of the prospective customers.
âWho cares about a stupid sign? Canât you see thereâs a touching reunion happening?â With one last shove, she slams the door, and then gives the âopenâ sign a vindictive little flip, and then she draws the blinds on the shop windows, just for good measure. As soon as sheâs satisfied she rights her overturned chair and sits back down.
âOkay, you can continue,â she says daintily.Â
Juno frowns. That whole display has given him a few moments to get over the shock of seeing Nureyev again, which means heâs had a few seconds to put together the clues. âYouâve been spying on me.âÂ
âI wouldnât call it spying,â Nureyev says. âJust checking in on you. I wanted to make sure you were alright.â
ââJust checking inâ would be checking my social media feeds,â Juno says.
âI hardly see why. You havenât touched those in years.â
Juno ignores him. âNo. You opened a business between Ritaâs apartment and my office, and youâve been grilling her for information on me, havenât you?â
âI would hardly call it âgrillingâ, Juno. I just gave her a few drinks in exchange for a bit of advice.âÂ
âYou shoulda seen him, boss,â Rita says from her place by the window. âHe was just so sad, and then when heâd talk about you he wouldââ
âDonât you start,â Juno snaps. âYou sold me out for a latte.âÂ
âIt wasnât like that at all,â Rita says in a rush. âItâs just that you werenât ever gonna tell me what happened when you disappeared for all that time, but then Agent Glass explained it to me, and you shoulda said something, boss! And besides, he only wanted to know if you were doinâ okay. He was real worried about you, too.âÂ
âSo you did all this?â Juno demands. âWouldnât it be easier to just walk up to the door and⌠and say something?â
âI was building up to that,â Nureyev says.Â
âHe was worried about how youâd react,â Rita supplies helpfully.
Because of course he was.
Because any middle-schooler can ask a ladyâs friends if he likes them, but Peter Nureyev has to start his own goddamn small business first.Â
Iâve also seen this one used for Damien, but the second verse is particularly on point for Juno:
Tremble for yourself, my man,You know that you have seen this all beforeTremble little lion man,You'll never settle any of your scoresYour grace is wasted in your face,Your boldness stands alone among the wreckNow learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

Prompt: Diamond and Juno did get married. Juno still leaves HCPD and becomes a detective, and the Rex Glass case still happens, but this time Diamond is in the equation
You gave me this prompt ages ago, and I keep thinking Iâll get to it as soon as we actually meet Diamond.
But letâs be real, thatâs probably not gonna happen until next season, and thisâll be sitting around in my inbox for a full calendar year.
Donât get me wrong, this is a really good prompt, but Iâve got some personal hangups with writing a character that I know is going to be a big part of the story before we get a chance to actually meet them.Â
I did it a lot when I was writing about Welcome To Night Vale, thinking those characters were free game because they never actually got screen time (or in one case, because we were informed that character was literally dead)... and then they did, and they were nothing like the OCs that they now shared a name with. I get that thatâs entirely on me, but itâs a really uncomfortable feeling, and I try to avoid it when I can.
Upon relistening to day that wouldn't die I couldn't help but notice a quote at around 11:15 while they were in the sewer with the Juno-headed robot that went "the thing unfurled like a dragon, we were standing in its shadow, cold and dark as those eyes. Was this what I had looked like to that little girl twenty five years ago?" Probably unintentional, but an example of more juno and dragon imagery?
Thatâs a nice catch.
It brings to mind the game Juno used to play with Ben when they were kids:
Back when I was a kid I used to put a colander on my head and wrestle my brother for hours while he roared like a dragon and spat all over my face. I always felt invincible back then, like nobodyâd ever take me down, like I could do no wrong. (Dragonâs Den)
I imagine that after all the guilt and blame that their mother heaped on Junoâs shoulders, playing the hero was really empowering for him. Meanwhile Ben, who was generally a lot happier of a person and didnât seem to get the same kind of abuse, had no problem playing the villain.
And when he was tormenting little Annie Wire, he was definitely acting the part of a villain.
I gave Peter magpie wings; I didnât say so explicitly, but I gave Juno osprey wings.
I also did an Angels and Demons AU, though I havenât gotten very far with that one as of yet, and I havenât described either of their wings in any detail.
