The Boathook
Actually a small and rather inconspicuous artefact but a very controversial one, at least as far as its history is concerned. What's it all about? The boat hook.
It's actually just a blunt tip metal hook on a pole that was used to pull things out of the water, grab moorings and haul in lines when mooring. There is now a lot of controversy in the research about the first appearance of the hook. Some assume that it only appeared in 1800, when it was first mentioned.
A boat hook probably from the Meikle Ferry near Dornoch, Scotland 1800 (x)
Difficult, because there is one that probably dates from the 1st century. Century.
Roman boathook made of iron, 1st century AD (x)
Boat hooks can also be seen in paintings made before 1800.
Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee, by Rembrandt van Rijn 1633 (x) and Watson and the Shark, by John Singleton Copley 1778
Therefore, it can be assumed that this tool has been in use since antiquity, if not earlier.
here are some things i have made for the boat - i decorated our boat hook and mop so they'd look fancy and i also recovered the not o great velour stools with some materials from my stash of awesome "i'll use that one day" materials. Oh, and a photo of the sleepy cats...

Lovely bilge-keeled corribee in working order and ready to sail with full set of sails. The paintwork below the waterline has been completely stripped, re-primed and antifouled. Can sleep 4. Comes with depth sounder, log, Silva S10 DSC radio and Garmin 126/128GPS. Sails beautifully and is very sturdy. Can easily be sailed single-handed. Comes with a purpose built, hardly used, 4 wheeled braked trailer. Currently on the Isle of Wight but could be happy discussing delivery to the mainland. This is a great sailing boat, only selling because I’ve moved too far from the sea to be able to use any more.Trailer Purpose built 4-wheeled braked trailer Only used four times since specially made and never submerged (boat always lifted out and placed on the trailer)Sails main Jib Genoa Storm Sail bags
