I am nervous, says BN Permatang Pauh candidate

PERMATANG PAUH, April 24, 2015:

The Barisan Nasional (BN) Permatang Pauh by-election candidate Suhaimi Sabudin, 44, said that he did not expect he would be contesting for the parliamentary seat.

“I feel so nervous. I did not expect to be selected as the candidate for the by-election here,” Suhaimi said today.

Suhaimi admitted that his job would be a difficult one as he had to compete with the Opposition who had been maintaining the seat for almost 20 years.

“We have to fight. This is the PKR’s stronghold for over 17 years and we can’t let them continue staying here, or else we can never make the Prime Minister’s vision come true which is to gain back our dignity here.”

He said this in his speech at the Permatang Pauh Polytechnic here today during the launch of the Wanita BN election machinery by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The by-election is being held following the five-year imprisonment of its incumbent, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was found guilty of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar had initially won the parliamentary seat back in 1982 under the Barisan Nasional’s ticket before he was sacked in 1998. His wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail captured the seat in the 1999 General Election and it had been PKR’s stronghold ever since.

In the last general election, Anwar defeated Barisan Nasional’s Dr Mazlan Ismail with a 11,721-vote majority.

Nomination closed, EC to announce Rompin candidates soon

ROMPIN, April 22, 2015:

With Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS candidates having filed their papers to contest in the Rompin parliamentary by-election, the Election Commission (EC) is set to make an official announcement on it soon.

BN’s Datuk Hasan Arifin and PAS’ Nazri Ahmad both filed their papers before 9.15am.

While there was talk earlier of an Independent candidate who had expressed interest in contesting, up until 9.45am, it appeared that the election would see a straight fight between Hasan and Nazri.

However, at 9.50am, Mohd Shukri Mohd Ramli arrived, only to have his application rejected by the EC.

Mohd Shukri when met by reporters said he was informed by the EC officer upon submitting his nomination form that the reason his application was rejected was because he had begun campaigning very early.

Prior to that, an angry Mohd Shukri was seen walking out of the nomination centre and was also spotted tearing his papers in front of the media.

As it stands, it would appear that the Rompin by-election would see a straight fight between BN and PAS.

Also present at the nomination centre earlier was Bukit Ibam assemblyman Datuk Wan Khadri Wan Mahussin.

When met outside the nomination centre at the Jubli Perak Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah hall in Kuala Rompin, here, Wan Khadri said Hasan was the most qualified choice to replace the late Tan Sri Jamaluddin Jarjis.

Wan Khadri said he had known Hasan for more than 20 years and remarked that the latter had a big heart and was always fighting for Umno.

Hasan’s experience in being an administrator was also a key factor that got him selected as a candidate, said Wan Khadri, apart from being a true Rompin man who knows the issues of the community.
