the door to the apartment swings open, maddie on the other side.

“oh, i- i didn’t think- i’ll just go, i’m gonna go to chimney’s. you two- yeah, have a good day.”

the door closes gently and silence wraps itself gently around them.

“eddie-“

“you know what? you can forget i said anything, okay?”

he finds eddie quietly sipping a cup of coffee at the island, eyes laser focused in his phone.

he stands in the doorway and admires the other man for a moment. the light cascading over him, catching the little bits that blaze golden brown in the sun.

“-die?” he asks softly, his voice cracking.

he watches as eddie raises his head and takes in what’s in front of him.

“hey sleepy head.”

buck fidgets with the corner of the blanket, “you spent the night?” he tilts his head and scrunches his brow.

“you thought i wouldn’t?”

the way that eddie’s brow scrunched was impossibly adorable.

“you could have just- we have bef-“

“i know. it seemed like you needed a little space.”

and it shakes buck to his core, how casually eddie knows him better than he knows himself. because if he was honest- yeah he did need to be alone. but not truly.

“i don’t know that i could have left you alone, even if you had told me to leave.” it’s a soft admission.

and eddie’s gaze is so steady and warm.

“oh”

a little context is that maddie and buck left pennsylvania together just after his 18th birthday and made their way across the country and doug never existed.

“Do you remember the day I was born?” Chris asks him from the kitchen table, art supplies for his family tree project spread across the table. He is pointedly looking at Buck, pausing in the middle of writing Buck’s name slotted next to Eddie opposite Shannon. Buck can tell he struggled with spelling her name, the second “n” suspiciously “o” like.

“Chris buddy, we didn’t know-“ Eddie begins to reply in his soft understanding dad voice from the island where he’s doing meal prep. Buck glances at him as if to say “I got this.”

“It was a run of the mill day, I was 20 and Maddie and I had just reached California. I spent the day building Ikea furniture and hauling what we found for cheap. It was hot and I was sweating cause our first apartment didn’t have air conditioning.” Buck answers the question, answer rolling off his tongue. because he’s thought about this, “I wasn’t there, but I remember it like it was yesterday.”

“you’re doing it again.”

he swallows.

“oh, sorry.”

buck looks at him like he wants to say something but he just adjusts his position on the couch, releasing an ounce of tension. eddie moves to sit next to him but cuts himself short, sitting on the edge, balancing- still waiting to be pushed off the edge.

“you can like, take your jacket off and actually sit on the couch you know.”

and the band around his chest keeping him from fully breathing snaps as he really takes in how relaxed buck is now. there’s still an edge, but he looks more like himself.

“so, what are we doing tonight?…”

Eddie can’t tear his eyes away. ‘Cause it looks good on him. And he’s happy for the kid too. To be receiving that attention and love. Feeling another persons blood pumping and heart beating after all she had known was less comforting.

Miranda knocks into his shoulder which shakes him out of focus.

“You okay in there lover boy?”

Eddie just rolls his eyes and picks up another chart, eyes still darting toward Buck every few seconds.

He taps out a text,

Your brother is going to be the death of me I swear.
