It's a breezy September in 1995, you pop your boyfriend's CD into your player and listen to its contents. It's an album they've been working on for a few months, you've heard his constant complaining that it's rushed and horrid, they're just trying to appease the press and the fans and meet this deadline.
As you listen to it you think “It's not half bad.”
You actually don't mind it, the thing is.. It lacks a bit of soul, it sort of screams “were burnt-out, leave us alone for awhile.”
That adds up.
You were in a long distance relationship with Damon but from your short phone calls you could tell he was worn out, and maybe taking too many drugs. One time you called him at the studio while he was recording the album with the band, his best friend Graham picked up and he sounded distraught, on the verge of crying. “Its just not right, it sounds terrible!” he wined into the line before confessing he'd walked in on Damon doing some pretty hard substances.
It didn't surprise you, the band blew up in the past 3 years, it was bound to burn them out. Damon didn't return your calls much these days and when he did, they were short and you could tell he needed some solid support. You had some money saved up from your job so you did what any rational girlfriend would do, fly across the world to help out your boyfriend.
As you got to his flat, you still had the key from your last visit and walked in, the place was nice as usual but a little unkempt, he most likely didn't have any time to keep up with anything or clean. Today was a Thursday and he was out practicing with the band so you decided to use this extra time to tidy up. Put his dirty laundry in the wash, clean his kitchen, do the dishes. Take out his trash.
He had a bunch of empty beer cans and take out containers, along with dozens of cigarette packets. As you were folding his laundry you heard the lock turn before he realized it was already unlocked, he apprehensively looked inside before seeing you, folding some of his pants.
“Hey sunshine!” you called out, walking up to him and hugging him. He seemed stunned before hugging you back, wrapping his arms around your waist and shoving his face in the crook of your neck. He took 5 deep breaths just breathing you in, to him, you were better then beer, better then cigarettes, better than any drug or award on the planet. He finally let go and looked at you.
“How’d you get here?” he asked.
“I flew obviously.”
“You should have told me I would have paid for your flight.”
“No, it was a surprise.”
He looked at you as you said that, a look you'd never really seen before, one of..appreciation, A soft “thank you” gleaned in his eyes.
The man was very good at bottling stuff up, and never really opening up but you could tell this was a time when he really needed care.
He takes off his jacket and shoes and looks around his flat, the place clean and tidy. He just looks at you again and pulls you down on the couch. His tall body pressing you into the cushions in an embrace.
“Thank you..” he whispered into your neck.
"It's okay, I could tell you felt a little off color.”
“That's a bit of an understatement..” he chuckled solemnly.
“Well I didn't get a flight back, so I'll take care of you for a while..”
He leaned up, sitting on the couch normally now, he pulled your legs into his lap, he always enjoyed absentmindedly playing with them.
“What about your life back home?”
“Didnt have much there, I travel as a model, the only thing I have back home is my belongings.”
He looked at you again, pressing a kiss to your knee, “if you say so.” He muttered before you pulled on a little stand of his hair to get him to look at you.
“You're my everything Dames..You're the only thing I need okay, and I need you to feel better. So just rest okay?” He smiled and laid his head down on your lap.
“I was gonna order you food I can't when you're acting like a cat!”
He made a meow sound before adding, “Alex made us eat something odd for lunch, Graham threw it up and it hurt my stomach, killed my appitite..I just want to lay here..” he said before closing his eyes, he looked up and stated further, “your the only thing im hungry for..” He smirked as you yelled “Dames!”
You were just happy to see the man smile again. Wafting your hand in front of your nose you made a PEW-WEE sound, he sat up and kissed your cheek.
“What?” his voice is teasing now.
“You smell..”
“You're so quick to judge me, you got airport germs on you.”
The two of you chuckled before he pulled you up, "C'mon let's shower.”
