                    her   legs   are   curled   up   on   her   bed   ,   the   sheets   damp   and   tangled   around   her.   she   doesn't   think   she   was   screaming    —    at   least   not   this   time.   not   enough   to   have   woken   anyone.

                    that's   dumb.   sometimes   she   wakes   up   because   the   ENERGY   in   a   room   shifted   ;   it's   stupid   of   her   to   expect   anything   different   of   her   sisters.   at   the   end   of   the   day   ,   they've   all   come   to   the   same   conclusion   :   they   aren't   safe.   there   is   no   place   where   they   will   be   left   alone.   no   calm   spot   to   rest.   they   have   been   woken   from   their   sleep   to   deal   with   villains   across   the   city   ,   across   the   world.   they've   been   attacked   in   their   own   home.   (   they've   been   attacked   by   their   own   father   ,   by   their   brother.   )   their   shields   never   truly   drop   ,   never   find   a   place   where   their   hackles   aren't   raised.   even   in   sleep.

                    bubbles   deals   with   it   best   ,   buttercup   thinks.   there's   an   optimism   and   a   pep   to   her   step   that   even   blossom   can't   really   duplicate.   sometimes   its   easy   to   believe   that   all   this   shit   rolls   off   her.   like   she   isn't   effected.   but   then   she   wakes   in   the   middle   of   the   night   to   the   slightest   pin-drop   sound    —    buttercup   gasping   awake   after   a   mild   nightmare    —    and   the   illusion   drops   away.   

                    buttercup   grabs   the   water   and   leans   against   the   cool   wall   against   her   bed   ,   staring   at   the   ceiling   so   she   doesn't   have   to   think   about   the   sweaty   sheets   she'll   have   to   clean   ,   so   she   doesn't   have   to   look   at   bubbles   in   her   too   soft   ,   too   understanding   eyes.   

                    “   thanks.   ”   she   hadn't   realized   she'd   already   chugged   the   water   by   the   time   she   speaks.

                    uh.

                    she   should   probably   lie.   she   should   probably   bullshit   her   way   through   this.   she   PROMISED   the   professor   she   wouldn't   spoil   the   surprise.   granted   ,   her   promises   are   usually   damn   near   worthless   ,   but   she   thought   bubbles   would   enjoy   this   one.   they   can't   keep   regular   animals   ,   despite   bubbles'   constant   insistence.   she   honestly   thought   bubbles   would   enjoy   this   !   ace   isn't   any   dog    ---    he's   the   fucking   bathound.   well-trained   enough   to   very   literally   bite   the   dick   off   anyone   who   gets   too   close.   dogsitting   the   bathound   is   ,   in   buttercup's   opinion   ,   much   better   than   having   their   own   dog.

                    he's   trained   ,   violent   ,   and   adorable.   and   only   there   for   like   ,   a   week   ,   thus   requiring   very   little   extended   effort.   bruce   or   dick   or   one   of   the   OTHER   batkids   would   be   back   to   collect   him   in   a   little   ,   when   their   fancy   and   expensive   vacation   was   over.   the   professor   had   to   pull   quite   a   few   strings   with   alfred   to   get   bruce   to   agree   to   this   ;   it's   no   secret   that   buttercup   herself   doesn't   quite   like   batman.   the   dog   ,   though   ,   has   absolutely   nothing   to   do   with   her   distaste   for   the   vigilante.   honestly   ,   having   ace   around   for   a   little   while   will   be   cool   as   shit.

                    probably   should   have   checked   with   bubbles   first   ,   since   the   animal   would   UNDOUBTEDLY   be   her   responsibility.   that's   just   how   things   happened   at   their   house.   whatever.   buttercup   could   take   the   dog   out   every   couple   hours   and   feed   him   and   play   with   him   if   bubbles   decided   to   check   out.   

                    “   like   a   week   ?   ”   buttercup   offers   sheepishly   ,   shrugging.   

send in “ i thought i told you to stay put?! ” for the sender to yell at the receiver out of fear for the receiver’s safety, after the receiver ignored instructions to not follow the sender into a dangerous situation.

“ You and I both know that I was never going to listen to you. ” Josh replied to her words as calm as he could. He was better now, he was more trained, able to control his powers in a way he had never been able before. Of course, he still wouldn’t say he was ready to fight but the situation they were in, he wouldn’t let her do this all on her own. “We’re in this together, if you want it or not. I’m not leaving.”
