SC14の期間中に発表されるスーパーコンピューターのランキングというとTOP500が有名ですが、他にもGreen 500、Graph 500といったランキングがあります。(去年の6月から Green Graph 500も登場）
冒頭のリンクは、Graph 500の最新のランキング･リストへのリンクであり、ご覧いただくと、Top10のうち8つのシステムがIBM BlueGene/Qで構築されているシステムであることを確認いただけるかと思います。
TOP500が数値計算性能のランキングであるのに対して、Graph 500は、グラフ処理における速度のベンチマーク結果のランキングであり、データ解析の性能の指標とされています。
どうしても、TOP500のランキングばかりに目がいきがちで、日本人的には「京」のランクが気になりますよね。
でも、ぜひ、別のランキングにも注目していただきたいのです。エネルギー消費効率のランキングであるGreen 500の、2014年6月の首位は東京工業大学のTSUBAMEであり、同じく2014年6月のGreen Graph 500では1位から6位までを九州大学と東京工業大学のシステムで占めています。
もちろん、Graph 500におけるSequoiaの首位復帰を喜びたいというのが、IBMの社員としての私の立場ではありますけれども。
ちなみに、2012年に、そのSequoiaがTOP500の首位を獲得したときに、IBMのDistinguished Engineerである清水さんに講師をお願いして開催したセミナーの資料をSlideShareで公開しています。

Next month, one of the world's fastest supercomputers will run the largest, most complex universe simulation ever attempted.
Sequoia, the most powerful supercomputer (for now) and a 2012 PM Breakthrough Award winner, was built to model nuclear weapons explosions. But before the machine goes fully classified, scientists used its incredible power to build a simulation of the human heat that looks down to the cellular level and predicts how a heart would respond to particular drugs.
Sequoia is currently capable of 16.32 petaflops—that's more than 16 quadrillion calculations a second—55 percent faster than Japan's K Computer, which is ranked No. 2, and more than five times faster than China's Tianhe-1A, which surprised the world by taking the top spot in 2010. Sequoia's processing power is roughly equivalent to that of 2 million laptops.
