the king paced back & forth wordlessly, still in his underclothes with a mere robe over his taut shoulders. he had been unwell since morning, and thus had decided to retire back to his chambers barely into the noon. alone. and that is when the unimaginable happened ; an attempt on his life by a traitor posing as one of his guards. aegon survived the encounter, but that was more surprising was that so did his attacker. when he had found the king not as drowsy & helpless as he might have hoped the traitor fled, not wishing to continue dallying with trying to kill the king until the real guards arrived and overwhelmed him. but since he still hadn't been found he must have been outside the walls by now. most probably having had some help while accomplishing such feat.
but by whom ? who else knew the castle so intimately ? & when would be their next attempt ?
the worst part of having been threatened in his own chambers was that the incident had to happen right when they were hosting important guests in hopes of forging a new alliance ... such king he must have looked to the lady belaerys now ! pacing petulantly like a caged beast, unable to get his claws on the traitor & make an example of him.
she too was present at the emergency council, pointing out the would-be assassin's predicament. aegon turned to his lord commander, tired of having to wait. "i mustn't be sitting idle, i wish to join the patrol in the woods upon sunfyre."
"you must do no such thing, your grace, they might have aimed to lure you out. you won't see a thing when he's lurking under the trees anyway. give it a few more hours, he won't get too far on foot."
he argued no further, though visibly dissatisfied. still he refused to lose any more composure in front of his honored guests.
"lady azula, you must be quite surprised, if not disappointed but i can assure you that so am i. there must be a traitor in our midst, otherwise i would have suffered no such humiliation in my own home." the king turned his accusatory gaze at his own council then, much to everyone else's dismay.
