Shanyin snarled as he drove his fist into another practice dummy before whirling around and kicking another in the head. The martial artist’s eyes burned red as flames rose from his body. He threw another over his shoulder and drove his fist into its neck when he heard the door click open.

It wasn’t that Blake didn’t trust the other members of Team RWBY yet. She didn’t distrust them. But they were new, and this was complicated, and featured elements of her past she didn’t want to explain yet. It had been perhaps a week since the Emerald Forest Entrance Exam. A few weeks since the train job. Long enough for Blake to suspect something was off. For fear to consume her of what might be.

So the girl in black had left early in the morning to pick up something in town. And waited till late at night to slip out of bed soundlessly. She’d assumed the other three teenage girls were sound asleep-and that she could get away unnoticed.

Silence was something Blake was good at. And going unnoticed, if she wished. Not that she was trying all that hard at the latter-just at being quiet as she opened the door to the hall. An amount of light streamed in from the hall, still lit for students who found themselves in need of the facilities. Like she did.
