on Dutch food, by Alexandre Bliek
Hypothesis for why most Dutch people can't do keto/low carb diets succesfully for a longer period of time:
Due to Calvinism we are taught that Moderation and Temperance are Virtues from an early age. So all food is either 'lekker' (tasty) or just normal like bread, potato, rice, etc. Vegetables also don't count as 'lekker'. But meat does. Sauce (mostly mayonaise but we have many sauces !) is used to make the 'normal' stuff more 'lekker'.
And what you eat always has to be a balance between those two. So for example I was not allowed to eat a cheese sandwich with TWO slices of cheese it could only be one. Except maybe on Sunday then maybe you can get a sandwich with ham AND cheese on it. This is done not out of an actual Religious Dogma but simply because we believe it's more healthy as well as cost effective.
So whenever I see something out of a keto or low carb diet in my opinion that meal is completely unbalanced and I cannot eat that. It does not have enough 'normal' substance to compensate for all the 'lekkers'.
But hey maybe this is just me and my family in particular? But I've heard similar rules from many people. I heard from someone that she always had to eat a cheese sandwich first before eating chocolate sprinkles for example, as chocolate sprinkles are 'lekker' and cheese is 'gezond' (healthy). So I am preeeeeetty sure I'm not the only one.
