It had taken a grueling amount of your soul to finally have you here—seated upon a chair, the bright glow from your laptop casting a harsh light upon your face, and just within reach of ending your torment.
You take a moment to survey your work, lips pressed together as you try your hardest to spot any inconsistency that your professor would not appreciate. However, next to your laptop, your phone makes itself reminded of when it releases a brief ping!
You drag your gaze to your phone, immediately recognizing the contact.
When you look back at your laptop, you can see your smiling face reflected in the screen and you purse your lips harder in spite of the upturned quirks at the corners.
Let’s get this over with, is your only thought as you bring the cursor to the dark green box with [S U B M I T] emblazoned upon it and, sighing, finally press click.
You wait until the webpage finishes loading, confirming your submission, and you don’t waste a second longer. Pushing your laptop shut with one hand, you pick up your phone with the other and unlock it with a swipe.
U done yet? is the first thing Kai sent you, followed by a bubble of text that states Message deleted in a sad grey, then finally a, Want to celebrate and get something to eat?
Though the deleted message does make you curious, your thoughts are more preoccupied with the fondness that wells up in you like a bright pink cloud.
Immediately, your thumb finds the call icon and you grin secretively to yourself, imagining his caught-off guard expression to it.
It takes around eight rings until your call is answered, and what greets you is a voice much huskier than what you’d expect.
“What’s up?” Kai answers, sounding as if he’d just gone through a marathon, which is impossible, because the both of you just took the same exam. There’s a strange sound going on in his background that, when you press your phone against your ear, you identify as rain…
No.
Wait.
Your eyes widen when you realize that is definitely not rain. Or, well, kind of, but not the point.
It’s a shower going off, the rapid pitter-patter of drops echoing in a closed space, and oh shit, oh fuck.
Kai must have been in the shower. Kai should have been in the shower, but you and your horrible brain had decided to call him.
“Uhh.” Your horrible, horrible brain is running a mile a minute as you try your best to get those words pumping OUT. “Yeah. Sure, meet you at the same place?” Genius. You internally pat yourself on the back, hoping that your words didn’t come out cracked.
There’s the sound of rustling in the background, and you squeeze your eyes shut because holy shit, you do not need thoughts of Kai in a towel right now.
“For lunch?” Kai eventually responds, and it takes you a while to realize that he’s clarifying what place you’re talking about. You stop your mental patting.
“Yeah!” Is all you can really say right now.
“Your treat?”
“Yeah!” You eagerly confirm.
Wait.
Wait one fucking second.
“NO!” You exclaim into your phone, your earlier embarrassment turning into one of indignation. “I’m not treating you again! You sucked my entire wallet dry the last time,” you bemoan, clenching your fist at the memories that float by in your head.
There’s an odd crackling sound that goes through the line, and you easily recognize as him trying to hide his chuckles.
“But you already said yes~” He drawls out into a sing-song note.
“Yes to treating you with my presence,” you shoot back.
Kai hums long and deliberately drawn out, before he sighs playfully, “Fine…Just give me a few, I’m taking a shower.”
And the way he says it so casually makes you bring a hand up to your forehead, pushing away any of your creative brain cells back like they’re a pack of hyenas.
“Yeah, yeah,” You wave off. “I’ll go and get us a table. Bye.” You wait until he bids you goodbye back before ending the call.
You press your phone against your chest, staring at the wall for a few moments to get your bearings together.
Get a friend like Kai, a voice in your head snorts. He can help with studying. He’s a fun guy. No way he’ll be a distraction.
How wrong that voice in your head is.
