Calum would have been with his girlfriend for 4 years now and every morning, he’d search his head for a white hair and his face for a wrinkle because surely, he should have started ageing by now. But he would never find any and the fact his girlfriend still looked like she was eighteen years old resulted in the both of them ignoring the big elephant in the room: the possibility that maybe they weren’t soulmates. And you’d have known him for the last two years and during those two years, you’d never known what to say whenever he questioned his relationship or how to answer when he asked you if he looked any older than he did last month.

It’d be approaching his 5 year anniversary when he’d roll out of bed one morning, half asleep as he brushed his teeth. He wouldn’t notice the white strand in the middle of his fringe at first because he’d stopped looking for signs of ageing months ago but eventually, the light would hit it and Calum would frown before realising what it was and he would feel so ecstatic that he wouldn’t even think twice before rushing back into his shared bedroom, shaking his girlfriend awake. “Baby, look!” And she’d be excited too, following Calum into the bathroom and sitting on the edge of the bathtub as he searched her head for a white hair. But he wouldn’t find one and suddenly his happiness would disappear because there was the confirmation they’d both been trying to avoid.

He would be tempted to skip work that day, his break up fresh in his mind but he’d force himself to go anyway and the whole day he’d be distracted, trying to think of who he’d been spending time with recently to pinpoint who could have kickstarted his ageing process. And it’d be lunch break when you’d sit down at his table, grinning as you held out a strand of your own fringe out towards Calum.
