It took a bit before Orchella was eventually able to befriend the new king.
In retrospect, she likely shouldn’t have come on as strong as she had. She’d just been so excited at the prospect of someone else to talk about magic theory with that she hadn’t been able to contain her excitement. Unfortunately, the young king’s anxiety over their new surroundings and role had meant her enthusiasm had been....more than a bit overwhelming to them.
She’d tried to back off after that first meeting. But her desire to befriend the new king and discuss magic theory with them remained.
It took a good few months of slow contact before she managed to have a conversation with them. Most often when Voxis came to the library, they wanted to read and hide. They weren’t in the mood for talking. It was understandable, especially given all the pressure they were no doubt under. She didn’t want to overwhelm them any more than they already were.
Libraries had always been safe places for her when she’d been young, and she wanted the library to be a safe place for Voxis. She wanted the library to be their escape from the pressures and expectations of their station. The fact that Jolias and Aralia both tended to keep to themselves and do their work certainly helped in that desire, thankfully. But Orchella herself needed to reign in her own excitement as well.
And she did. Or at least made an effort not to come on so strong toward Voxis. She said hello to them, tried not to bother them too much, and offered help whenever she thought it was appropriate.
Eventually, it paid off. Orchella would never forget the first time she got Voxis to smile and start to talk in length about a particularly interesting tidbit they’d found in their research. From the moment she saw that smile, Orchella vowed to herself that she would protect Voxis. They weren’t very much like her actual little sibling, but her big sister instincts could be pretty strong sometimes.
After that conversation, Voxis started specifically coming to Orchella with requests for books. Specifically books they seemed to know the others wouldn’t give them. Orchella didn’t connect the dots at the time, just happy that Voxis was comfortable enough to ask her for things. In retrospect, though, she wished she’d paid more attention. Maybe if she hadn’t been so eager to help she would have seen the signs and been able to stop them.
Dwelling on it won’t do anything, though. Only make her feel worse in her state of death. So we’ll move on.
It was a few months before the coronation when Voxis told Orchella why they wanted the specific books she’d been providing them. She’d asked what their interest was, especially since the books Voxis requested contained information about the magic of the royals that was never to leave the castle.
“I need to find out how the Elrios tree works,” they said. “So that I can find a way to get out of this.”
They’d expressed before that they very much did not want to be King, but Orchella hadn’t expected that Voxis would do anything about it.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” She asked, suddenly feeling a bit ill at ease. “Meddling with that sort of thing could have some serious consequences.”
Voxis’ shoulders hunched and they looked away, wrapping their arms around themselves.
“You said before you have a little sister, right?” They asked after a beat of silence.
“I...I do.” Orchella nodded.
“You’d do anything to protect her, wouldn’t you? To make sure she’s safe and happy?”
“I would.”
Voxis’ shoulders lowered slightly. “It’s the same for me. I’d do anything to protect Valeria. And this...” They gestured around the library, immediately tensing once more. “This isn’t good. For either of us. We can’t do this. We don’t have any kind of experience with anything that this job involves. Please...” They looked so painfully young as they stared at her. She’d never noticed how blue their eyes were before...
Orchella folded her arms, chewing on her lip. If anyone found out she was aiding in this, she could lose her job. Or worse.
But looking at Voxis, seeing the pleading look in their eyes, as though they were begging her to understand...She didn’t know how she would live with herself if she didn’t at least try to help. It wouldn’t feel right to doom them to a lifetime of misery.
“Well, I can’t exactly say no to a plea like that, can I?” She laughed weakly. “Alright. I’ll help you.”
“Really?” The way Voxis’ face lit up practically made her heart melt.
“Really,” she nodded. “And, I have to admit, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about how the tree works.”
“We’ll find out.”
They started meeting in secret after that to research, disappearing into the back to look over their books until someone came to look for them.
“It does seem wrong,” Orchella admitted one day, voice hushed as they huddled shoulder to shoulder behind one of the back shelves. “Just to force someone into that role without any warning. Feels like there should be an...option to opt out if you really don’t want it.”
“Well, that’s what I’m trying to find out,” Voxis said, flipping a page. There was a clipped tone to their voice that often indicated they didn’t want to talk at the moment.
Orchella fell silent, turning her gaze to the book spread out on her lap. They hadn’t found much about how the siblings could escape their positions as monarchs short of making the Elrios tree choose another. Which seemed unlikely.
They had, however, found a way to keep Valeria and Voxis from being made monarchs permanently. If they didn’t perform the fusion outlined in the royal spellbook, there was still a possibility they could find a way out. Voxis had said they couldn’t tell Valeria about this.
“She wouldn’t understand what we’re doing,” they’d said.
Orchella didn’t like it, nor did she agree with it, but she had kept quiet. She knew it was a fight she would lose and she didn’t want to drive a wedge between herself and Voxis. She didn’t want to damage this trust she’d built with them.
Unfortunately, the coronation did come before they could find a solution. Voxis and Valeria were crowned King and Queen. But, as Voxis and Orchella had discussed, the siblings didn’t go through the fusion that would have cemented their positions. Orchella tried to bury her guilt at keeping this crucial information from Valeria, focusing on her work instead.
She didn’t see Voxis as much after they and Valeria were crowned King and Queen. Even when they did drop by the library, they were almost always accompanied by Morgan or Cadallion. Orchella ended up utilizing the secret tunnels to continue their research sessions.
They hit a wall with their research almost a year after the coronation. It likely would have been sooner had Voxis not been preoccupied with their royal duties. Orchella had exhausted the supply of relevant books in the library that she could get away with taking and Voxis had read every single book cover to cover and taken copious notes on everything they could find.
“There has to be more,” Voxis said when Orchella told them she’d brought them every book she could.
“I mean...There are, yes,” Orchella tentatively replied from where she was sitting. “But they’re incredibly restricted. Jolias is the only one with access to them and there’s no way he’ll just let me take them.”
Although she was giving Voxis this bad news, that didn’t mean she’d given up. She had been planning ever since she’d realized she had exhausted the books she could get. But she still wanted Voxis to be aware of the situation in case she couldn’t think of something.
“What if you told him you were getting them for me?” Voxis asked, although they already knew what the answer would be.
Orchella shook her head. “Not even the monarchs are allowed to see those books unless they have specific permissions.”
“Let me guess, the Elrios tree is one of the ones you need to get permission from.” Voxis couldn’t help but let a growl slip into their voice.
“Yes.” Orchella nodded. “But.” She held up a hand before Voxis could throw the books off their desk. “I’ll see what I can do. I don’t know how much luck I’ll have, and I don’t want to do anything that could get me fired, but I’ll do my best.”
Some of the tension left Voxis’ shoulders at this reassurance. Still, they didn’t look entirely satisfied.
“You better find something,” they muttered. “This can’t have all been for nothing.” Their mood had declined drastically since the coronation. It didn’t take much for them to snap and lash out.
“I already told you I would do my best,” Orchella said, unable to keep herself from snapping. “I can’t promise miracles, Voxis. I’m just a librarian.”
“Well it can’t have been for nothing!” Voxis snapped right back. “I can’t fail!”
Orchella closed her eyes, taking a deep breath and exhaling through her teeth. “I’ll do what I can, alright?”
“I can’t fail,” Voxis repeated, voice softer this time as they turned their attention to their notes. “I can’t.”
Orchella took another deep breath, trying to calm herself. “I heard you the first time, Vox. And I’ll do what I can. But like I said, I can’t promise miracles.”
Voxis said nothing in reply.
Orchella took that as her cue to leave. However, as she turned to go, Voxis caught her arm.
“I’m....I’m sorry,” they said, avoiding her gaze. “I didn’t mean to shout. I just...You know how important this is, don’t you?”
Some of Orchella’s anger cooled slightly as she nodded. “I do.”
“You’re the only one I can rely on for this,” Voxis continued. “All the others would just try and stop me. You’re the only one who understands.” They held her sleeve a bit tighter. “Please don’t give up on me.”
Orchella softened further. “I won’t,” she assured them with a gentle smile. “I’ll do what I can to get you some new books, alright?”
“Alright. Thank you...” Voxis let go of her arm, allowing Orchella to finally leave. She didn’t catch the self-satisfied smirk that appeared on Voxis’ face as she climbed into the tunnel.
As she had expected, it was incredibly hard to get access to those books. Jolias had shut her down when she’d asked about them, and she didn’t have anything to offer Aralia in exchange for her help on this matter. Not to mention, Orchella didn’t want Aralia to have this information, as it could so easily be used against both her and Voxis. Aralia was her friend, and while Orchella did trust her, she also knew Aralia would gladly give away information if the price was right.
She avoided Voxis during her time of trying to access the books. She was sure it would end in a fight if she touched base with them. They would be frustrated with her lack of progress, she would be frustrated at their impossible expectations. It would just end with both of them screaming at each other. Not to mention, she didn’t want to disappoint them. Besides, it wasn’t as though it was hard to stay away from Voxis. They didn’t visit the library often anymore, and if they did, Orchella could just do some shelving and archiving in a different area.
This continued for a few months. She tried to find ways to access the restricted books while avoiding Voxis and trying not to let her work slack, each day growing more and more frustrated.
Until she finally found it.
It had been in a stack of old texts that were due for restoration, buried at the very bottom. No doubt it had been accidentally knocked in with them, as she was certain it wasn’t supposed to be there. It certainly didn’t belong with old texts about the history of farming in various regions.
She knew as soon as she saw it that this was something Voxis would want. It was covered in arcane runes, and the pages contained spells the likes of which she’d never even heard of before. She made sure no one was around before stashing it in her apron.
She had intended to give them the book that night, but something in her told her to wait. When she took a look at the book in her chamber, her hesitance only grew. The spells contained inside were incredibly dangerous. There was no telling what might happen if Voxis tried one of the spells and messed it up.
It was another few days before Voxis came to see her. She knew they were getting impatient. They would have come to check on her progress sooner or later. But her first thought when they entered her chamber from the tunnels was that they knew she’d been keeping the book from them.
“What have you found?” They demanded.
“Hello to you too, Voxis,” she replied, masking her fear with anger and annoyance.
“Fine, hello,” they snapped. “What have you found?”
Orchella hesitated, her gaze flicking to where the book was hidden in a drawer. If she didn’t tell them, they would be furious. But if she did....Who knew what would happen if she gave them the book?
“I...I did find a book,” she admitted. “It has a lot of spells in it that I’ve never seen before and looks really old.”
Voxis lit up. “Where is it? Show me! I want to read it!”
Their excitement only made Orchella even more worried. “It seems really dangerous. I don’t want you to get in over your head and do something you’ll regret.”
Voxis’ excitement was quickly snuffed out as a look of desperation settled on their features.
“Please, Orchella,” they begged. “This could be the answer I’ve been looking for! I need to see it!”
Orchella bit her lip, trying to look everywhere but at their desperate and pleading face. “It could be dangerous,” she repeated weakly. “You could end up getting hurt.”
“I’ll be careful,” Voxis said, taking her hand in theirs. “I promise.”
“You promise?” Slowly, she met their gaze.
“I promise.” Voxis gave her a reassuring smile, still squeezing her hand.
Orchella smiled back, drawing away and retrieving the book from her drawer. Voxis happily took the book, hugging her before disappearing back into the tunnels.
They stopped coming to the library after she gave them the book. They stopped leaving their room, in fact.
The more time that passed, the more she was sure she’d made a horrible mistake. Valeria, Dracari, Morgan, and Cadallion all looked increasingly more and more worried every time she saw them.
Finally, she couldn’t take it any more and went to Morgan and Cadallion.
“I think I made a horrible mistake.”
“What are you talking about?” Morgan asked, although they knew deep down what she meant.
“I gave them a book,” Orchella explained. “A...A very dangerous book of spells. And I think...I’m afraid they’re going to do something they’ll regret.” She looked pleadingly up at Morgan and Cadallion. “They trust you. If anyone can talk them out of whatever this is, it has to be you two.”
Morgan and Cadallion exchanged a look, almost seeming to share some unspoken understanding.
“We’ll talk to them,” Cadallion assured her.
Neither told her it would be alright. In retrospect, she appreciated that. It would have made the death that followed even more crushing that it already was.
Been feeling some really bad art block recently so I decided to do an outfit meme or two.Â
The outfit and character was chosen at random by a number generator for the first one.
The meme I used for teh first one. (If someone could point me in the direct of whoever made this meme so I can tag it. Would be amazing. )
Cursed tabby in C7
For the next 3 drawing I used a different meme and left it to a discord server to pick the outfit and the character they wanted. And this time I know who made the meme too!

The Research Assistant colloquially known as Crown didn’t know a lot of things.
She didn’t know how she’d started working at Black Mesa.Â
She didn’t know how to talk to people a lot of the time
She didn’t know a lot about science or biology, nor did she understand a lot of technical terms that her coworkers used.
She was pretty sure she wasn’t even qualified to be a scientist.Â
But she’d thought she knew who she was. Now...She wasn’t so sure.Â
Things had started changing after that first incident with the Xen crystal.Â
First of all, they’d had been sucked into a power struggle between two incredibly powerful alien entities, both of whom threatened the safety of their friends. This had, naturally, made Crown’s anxiety skyrocket.Â
She didn’t talk to new people very often, so being forced to talk to new people (neither of whom was human) and try to talk down an alien hivemind or the furious physical embodiment of an entire dimension while being overly emotional was definitely not her strong suit. Everyone in Black Mesa knew her. They knew what she was like, knew what to expect from her.
Xen and Voxis didn’t know her. They didn’t understand if she got overly emotional or blurted out the first thing that came into her mind without a thought for the consequences of those words. She’d definitely made things worse more than once when she’d just been trying to help or when she’d let her feelings overwhelm her.Â
Her conspiracy theories definitely hadn’t helped either, but they weren’t really supposed to. The conspiracy theories were mostly just her fucking around. Before XG1 and XB2 had arrived, she’d listened to Barney talk about conspiracy theories for hours when he’d been stationed outside the lab. Maybe at one point she’d believed them, but they’d quickly just become a way for her to get the others around her to laugh. Maybe that was why they hadn’t believed her about XG1 being Gordon. None of her other “theories” had held water.
Come to think of it, they’d been the same age back when the kids had arrived that they were now. Perpetually 22, fresh out of college, eager and bright-eyed. Never growing older, never growing up.Â
She’d never questioned it before this point. Never asked herself why none of them ever seemed to get any older or why they weren’t allowed to leave Black Mesa unsupervised. She’d never asked herself why she didn’t remember a time when she hadn’t been at Black Mesa. She’d never felt the need to.
Even after the first crystal mishap, when things had started to stir, she hadn’t questioned anything about her situation. Had she even been awake before that point? All her memories before then felt...fuzzy. Or as though she’d been watching a TV show. She could remember saying and doing things, but it felt like it hadn’t truly been her. Like she’d been nothing more than a passenger in her own body.
Now the Resonance Cascade had happened, leaving the facility literally in shambles while Xen creatures tried to attack them. And she and the others had realized they were part of a hivemind. Likely a failed one on Black Mesa’s part given how chaotic they could be.Â
Part of her was terrified of this revelation. The only experience she had with a hivemind of any sort was Voxis, and she absolutely did not want to be in that situation. The idea of losing their free will and being trapped in their own mind terrified them more than they could possibly say.Â
And yet...there was something comforting about knowing she was part of a bigger whole. Especially since the bigger whole wasn’t trying to exert its will on her and was full of people she liked being around.Â
She felt like she was finally alive for the first time in her life. She could feel the comforting presence of the other RA’s in the back of her mind, even when she couldn’t see them. She wasn’t alone. She’d never been alone. They were there for her. They’d always been there for her.
Despite the danger, she couldn’t help but feel a tad giddy.
It was just a pity she was having this joyful realization during what was basically the apocalypse.
