In Hawkins Lab in the upside down, Dustin finds Dr. Brenner's notebook that records the information about wormholes and exotic matter. However, a blog online noted that exotic matter being used to stabilise wormholes was only discussed in scientific papers in 1988 by Kip Thorne and his colleagues (https://ccsuniverse.wordpress.com/author/ccsugsci/). Dr Brenner, (and Mr Clarke btw) should not have this information in 1983 and 1987 before Kip Thorne's paper came out in 1988. Which, by the way, is the same Kip Thorne who worked on and informed the movie Interstellar.
We can assume that the Interstellar wormhole and Stranger Things wormhole are the same type: The Einstein-Rosen Bridge. This wormhole allows for connection to another place in spacetime. Which means that the abyss is in the same universe, just in another place. Yet the abyss is described as another weird dimension. The Einstein-Rosen bridge wormhole is theorised to be formed by a black hole and a white hole connecting (black holes cannot be escaped whilst white holes cannot be entered). In this sense, if you go through an Einstein-Rosen bridge, theoretically you wouldn't be able to go back. It's one way. Alongside this, time is slower at the event horizon ("the edge") of a black or white hole, and inside the black hole people have theorised that time stops completely inside. This explains why the Upside Down may be frozen in the time that the wormhole was made. However, it raises a question. Why are there several gates opened and closed throughout the show, when theoretically a wormhole would only have one entrance and one exit, and should be open constantly if it has exotic matter? Secondly, if the opening to the wormhole (the gates) are a black hole, then being right near the gate should slow time down, and also pull the entirety of Hawkins with it? Which just...doesn't happen. Lets take a moment to look at the Interstellar depiction of the same type of wormhole that Stranger Things uses.

The wormhole is supposed to be somewhat spherical because a wormhole bends spacetime. The tunnel imagery is just so it can be drawn in 2D. Also WHY ARE THE WALLS MADE OF FLESH? They are in SPACE! Alongside this, the use of exotic matter (a negative gravity substance) means that the upside down should have little to no gravity. Which just doesn't happen also. Another issue is that El supposedly made the wormhole when she made contact with a demogorgon. Does that mean she is powerful enough to open and close black holes, or did she just connect a black hole and a white hole? Perhaps the "void" that she goes to, is the inside of a black hole? Which would make sense because there are no horizons or edges in the void just like a black hole.
Whilst watching Interstellar, they mention gravitational anomalies in the universe, one of which being the formation of a wormhole near Saturn (the planet associated with time). They then say "a wormhole is not a naturally occurring phenomen" and "someone placed it there", that someone being 5th dimensional beings (evolved humans from the future). Seeing as this wormhole and exotic matter is coined from the same person that informed Interstellar, could we say that El is actually a 5th dimensional being? Perhaps this is the cause of her powers? Is it El that is the black hole? Is this why she can go into the void? Is El the reason why things like Will's birthday is forgotten, or why there are so many inconsistencies like the arrow changing colour, or the wrong names being used for different characters in newspaper articles?
Another fun fact is that "Hawking radiation" is the process of a black hole dying by slowly releasing particles. Isn't it strange that the Duffer Brothers created a fictional town named after "Hawking radiation", coined by Steven Hawking who is a major player in the black hole field? Why is there no mention of a black hole when black holes are the basis for Einstein-Rosen Bridges. Lastly, the reactions of the cast and the Duffer Brothers in the documentary, when they are describing the wormhole, convinces me that this shit is either fake or somethings not right.
