FINALLY made a new ref for my slasher-inspired OC, Cherry!

Cherry Vernon, also known as "The Button Killer", was a troubled teenager in the 1980s with a reputation for lashing out violently when crossed. Struggling terribly due to a series of losses in her life and no access to support, her stress continued to build and finally boiled over when she was driven to kill a predator out of self-defense. From there, she spiraled into a killing spree, taking the lives of seven people (including family) before her death in August of 1986. She is infamous for wearing a costume head of "Button", a children's character, to hide her identity.

I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT HER TODAY!! She’s been kind of left behind in my mind in general unfortunately because of my new guys but I still do love that gal

Cherry is interesting because she’s so abrasive and aggressive and scary but it’s all driven by fear. She wants control because so much has been taken away from her in the past without any way to prevent it in the form of sudden loss. She commits all of her murders because she knows that if she’s the one violently pushing away the people she cares about, they can’t leave her behind by surprise. It’s a controlled pain, and she thinks that it’s better, but in the end it’s still pain, and by the end of the story when she’s left all alone she realizes that it doesn’t really matter whether they all died by her hand or anyone else’s, because regardless, now they’re all gone.

The murder that she regrets the most out of the seven is the murder of her former best friend Razerr. He is the sixth, the second to last, because she cared about him the most, and tried to cut him out of her life completely to protect him from her increasing violence. His eventual murder was the product of an argument between the two of them, but it wasn’t quite because she was angry at him - the argument was over the fact that she had cut him off without any explanation, and he was hurt, because he still cared about her. The reason she killed him is because she couldn’t stand having someone left who she genuinely cared about and who cared about her in turn, because she knew it would hurt far too much for her to ever lose him, and by that point she had already killed five others, so if he knew the truth, it would be inevitable. She killed him in a panic in an attempt to avoid the pain of him becoming disgusted with her and cutting her off, which is horribly flawed logic, and of course caused absolutely nothing but more problems.

Cherry’s actions were inherently selfish and deeply wrong, but it’s interesting to dissect the reasons which actually drove her to do such horrible things to the people she really did care about.

I really enjoyed reading K.M. Allan’s debut novel and I wanted to shout about it on my blog. This is not my normal genre for a book review but I do devour these types of books when I am on a romance book reading holiday.
