Whilst visiting a bathroom showroom at a local retailer in Brisbane recently, I was quickly met by a young lady asking if I needed any help? I proceeded to tell her that I was in the market for some Black Tapware and if she could offer some guidance and assistance regarding my options that would be great.

“I’m not a fan” she replied, which was a little off-putting, to say the least. I asked what she meant by her remark and this is what she told me.

“If you want Black Tapware then expect to have some problems with the painted finish… it’s common for these taps to peel and crack and the manufacturer won’t give you any warranty if that’s the case”.

Surprised by her comments, I asked had she had a recent experience where this happened?

“No, I was told by another store that they had a customer who had purchased a Black Kitchen Tap and when they complained about the paint peeling the manufacturer told them it was normal wear and tear and that’s the problem with painted taps”.

Fortunately for me I’d already done a little research online before going to the store and had read a similar complaint about the powder coated finish on a Black Kitchen Tap, however, I also read that there is a new more durable finish available for Black Tapware called electroplating. This new finish doesn’t have the same vulnerabilities as power coated finishes especially Kitchen Mixer Taps which seem to get the most use and abuse.

I asked about the alternatives such as electroplating and her reply was even more astonishing.

“That’s chrome plating and it has nothing to do with Black Tapware but, if you want Black Tapware I can ask the supplier for a price and let you know in a few days”.

Wow! Did she really say that isn’t she the expert that sells these products on a daily basis, I remember thinking that I was glad she didn’t know anything about the electroplating on the Black Tapware because, if I ever had a problem she wouldn’t be too helpful at getting it resolved? I moved on to the next retailer to try and find a salesperson who could inform me about the new electroplated finish that I’d read about in the Black Kitchen Tap article online.

It just so happens after speaking with several other suppliers that there is a process called electroplating which is quite common and is used to produce colored mixer taps including Black Tapware, it’s reported to be as hard wearing as chrome plating. In fact, the majority of retailers that I spoke with all said it would be hard to find anyone doing power coated taps anymore.
