I’ve never been overly patriotic but I definitely don’t feel an ounce of patriotism this year. When people have lost their freedom to choose and police are killing black men in the streets, it’s hard to feel pride for a country that proves repeatedly that it doesn’t care about its people.

I attended a friend’s funeral today and needed a post-service cleansing activity, so I started rearranging my shelves. I was surprised to notice how many beautiful black books I have. This stack is only about 20% of them and it happens to hold a few of my all-time favorites, some that I really enjoyed, and some that I’ve recently read.
