National Arts in Education Week A Brief Interview with Principal Nakoley Renville, PS 208K
BAC builds successful Arts in Education programs by working together with school leaders who are committed to bringing the arts into their learning environment. Principal Nakoley Renville from PS 208K has been a school partner with BAC for six years. We spoke to Principal Renville about her strategies for creating high-quality arts education programs that inspire students to unlock their inner artists. BAC AIE: What are your best practices for sustaining a successful, strong partnership with an arts and cultural organization like BAC?
Principal Nakoley Renville: Communication and collaboration are the keys! No school or organization can work alone. By working in earnest with BAC, my school has established a relationship with this very important entity, so that our productive collaboration can continue. BAC AIE: What are some ways that you go about creating an arts-rich learning environment in your school? Principal Nakoley Renville: Best practices would include the following: 1. Being clear about your school's vision and mission around arts instruction and practice in your school. 2. Planning and sharing ideas with school staff about that vision and specifically what that entails. 3. Collaborating with outside agencies to find grant opportunities for your school. 4. Reaching out to your local Councilman or other community leaders for funding. 5. Always have a culminating performance or event in which you showcase student work to families, students, and to the community!
