I wanted to post a little bit of what I've learned about ultrasonics for BJD faceups! Ultrasonics are great for cleaning out your airbrush; they work by basically vibrating the crud off of stuff, including airbrushes and BJD heads. They can be found for ~$20 on eBay. Just search "ultrasonic" and they should come right up. To clean an airbrush, strip down your brush and toss all parts you're washing into the plastic basket that comes with it. Fill with pretty hot water and add a dash of your favorite airbrush cleaner. The cycle on mine lasts 2 minutes, so I run it a few times to get it nice and clean. Learn from my mistakes and heed MISTAKE #1: let the airbrush dry a good amount before reassembling and MISTAKE #2: do not over-lube—it’s a real mess!
To clean a head, fill ultrasonic with 90%+ alcohol, pop head into plastic basket and lower into alcohol. Run a few cycles, flipping the doll around to coat. If setting the doll's face down into the basket, place a cotton pad underneath to protect from any scratches. Wipe with cotton pads and the old faceup should come off like a charm! And now, my moment of shame...MISTAKE #3: put tan dolls into the ultrasonic with EXTREME CAUTION. As we bjd fans know, tan resin is a bit persnickety and can not go all the way through, which is why sanding a tan doll is not advised. Sometimes just the extremely gentle agitation from the ultrasonic can slightly frost your tan resin. I have to admit, guys, I was almost too embarrassed to post that I’ve made this mistake, and slightly frosted my poor Jacqueline by leaving her in too many cycles. ;__; But I really don't want anyone else to make the same mistake, and I'd rather turn my error into a learning experience that may help someone and forgive myself--we're all human! So VERY red-faced, I admit my biggest ultrasonic mistake to you in hopes it helps you. <3 I’ve never had this happen to a white skin or normal skin doll; it’s just the delicate nature of tan resin.
I hope this was helpful, and if you have ANY questions, please ask and I'll do my best to answer them! <3 Thank you for reading!
