The Strange Death of Phoebe Handsjuk

Phoebe Handsjuk (24) suffered a horrible death. On December 2nd, 2010, she was found by the concierge of her Melbourne building in the garbage room in a pool of blood. Phoebe had fallen through the garbage chute from the 12th floor, where she lived, but she survived the fall. Her foot got so severely injured though, nearly severed, that she died of blood loss after managing to pull herself out of the garbage bin she fell into.

At first police determined her death was a suicide. Later, after the coroner examined her and found a mix of alcohol and a sleeping pill in her system, he changed it to an accidental death.

But was it really? Her family doesn’t think so.

There’s a lot about Phoebe’s death that’s unexplained. For example, getting in that garbage chute, while possible, it’s pretty hard to do, especially if you’re drunk. Phoebe’s grandfather, a retired police detective who started his own investigation, tried it and the only way he could really do it was putting his hands all over the entrance of the chute. However, Phoebe’s fingerprints weren’t found anywhere in that entrance.

Phoebe lived with her older boyfriend, Antony Hampel, who is the son of a retired Supreme Court Judge. Her family suspects him, since Phoebe was planning to leave him. Unexplained bruises were found in her body, and traces of her blood were found in the couple’s apartment. Hampel objected to a coronial inquest and said things between him and Phoebe were fine, and that they were even planning a trip to Paris for Christmas.
