𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪 Kalmann, the self proclaimed Sheriff of Raufarhöfn in Iceland, has mental health problems which can lead to anger and aggressive behaviour. When he finds a pool of blood he can’t locate a body, but a local businessman’s disappearance forced him to tell the police. The beautifully descriptive language used in the translation to English is captivating. One would assume it is even more stunning in its original Icelandic. I felt I was carried away to the harsh beauty of the frozen environment, when even the open spaces could feel claustrophobic. I was rooting for Kalmann, with this mental health problems, his determination, and likeability, all the way through. His relationship with his grandfather was born heart-warming and heart-breaking, as he was devoted to the man, even though Kalmann knew he no longer recognised him. Overall, this was a thrill to read, and I am happy to recommend it to any crime thriller readers. I gave Kalmann, by Joachim B. Schmidt, and translated by Jamie Lee Searle, four stars. After I’d lost my job and had a horrendous disgusting times at the hands of one of the worst cos I’ve ever worked for in my life. This company you forced me to work during the Christmas period, when my daughter’s childcare centre had closed for the holidays in 2009. it was the most horrendous, disgusting cruel thing to do to a single working mother. Especially as the very boss who later would go on to sack me, (thank you) - ended up taking his children and his wife out to winter wonderland. The sheer hypocrisy and how they got away with it back then. But in 2021? There is no way this would be allowed to happen. I made sure I took them to court and even though I was naive and it was my first ever employment tribunal, after the court case, I jumped on a plane. I went to Bangladesh via Dubai. and continued my research into poverty and the solutions and realising that despite all the education in the world, if hardship can happen to me, what the hell was happening to those in the global south. Lovedesh is publishing slowly all the receipts of over 10 years grassroots research. We are not new on the scene. But we are new to those who have traditionally been holding the keys to the doors, when it comes to international development. I find it hilarious that Oxfam didn’t have time for me. I find it even more shocking that the British Council deemed me as being too inexperienced to assist them with their projects in Bangladesh as I was so desperate to work out there. So much so, that in the end I decided to do it all by myself. And many moons later, now look at Lovedesh.
