Bitonal Music
Here’s a little bit of a piece of bitonal music I wrote awhile back. The left hand is in C minor, and the right hand is in F major. It takes a while, but I think the sound is really neat if you can get everything in balance. Here is my list of things I try to do when writing this kind of music:
the melody has to clearly suggest one key, on its own. So in this case, since it is F major, I have to be using the tendency tones in F major often enough that F is clearly the key center when I play the melody by itself. 2. the chord progression in the accompaniment has to clearly suggest the other key, again on its own. 3. they have to not clash horribly with each other. lol I guess they can clash horribly if you want, but when everything is ‘in balance’ like this it does give a really unique sound, kinda plays with your understanding a bit since both keys are being suggested at the same time.
