Q: How do I market myself?
My talks at Bitmaker tend to generate some amazing follow up emails on how someone could market themselves.
Hereâs a recap of the latest email Iâve received on the subject:
Writer on social justice issues.
Trying to grow a new Facebook page
Bulk of time spent writing and book talks
Trying to find someone who wants to work on getting writing / first book out into the world.
Unpaid.
Any advice as to best ways to try finding a person who might be interested in this kind of job?
If youâre interested, DM me and Iâll provide more information and an introduction.
The larger question is how can someone be more visible on the internet and the short answer is to make sure youâre making the best content on the internet and that content is being seen by the relevant community.
The Long Answer:
Build a Blog and connect a Domain and Google Analytics to it.
There are a myriad of choices out there for a blog engine and theyâre all pretty good. I personally use Tumblr because itâs free, simple and reliable. Medium is also a solid choice but since you canât own the traffic, I wouldnât send any additional users to it.
Donât use Wordpress.
The time it takes to learn Wordpress tends to distract owners from producing actual value.
Plugins are usually poorly written and have no clear feedback loop when something goes wrong for someone.
Make sure you include the cost of hosting your Wordpress site into the mix.
Pipe the blog posts to marketing / communication channels that your community lives on like Medium, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc.
There are many tools thatâll help you do this like Zapier and IFTTT
This is important as people tend to treat things as Facebook OR Twitter, X OR Y, rather than, Facebook AND twitter. When youâre doing paid marketing, then the game changes because tracking headaches outweighs many of the benefits from multi-channel marketing.

Day-10: Namaste
Today we got deeper into the world of HTML, CSS, Sinatra, and.. stuffs. The lesson was mostly about how to create different types of forms, such as checkbox, radio, text box, etc.Â
There was also a yoga class taught by Rebecca, and I got to borrow a pink mat today! Near the end of Savasana, I felt like a kid whoâs spent all day at the playground, not wanting to go back home; the sun is setting, skyâs getting dark, and mom would soon come get me, because the dinner is almost ready. The instructor woke us up, and we prayed namaste. For some reason, I wanted to cry, but I shied away.Â
Day-9:Â âconvention over configurationâ
I forgot to make my blog entry yesterday, but that doesnât mean I canât write it the next day. I can still write about the fact that I forgot about it.Â
Since we got into HTML & CSS, things got a little easier. Mina told us that CSS can get very difficult, but ensured us that it is worth the investment. So off I go, typing furiously, again and again... By the way, everything is a box in HTML, apparently.
Day 8:Â âwait, thatâs an erb file?
âChili with multi-grain bagel and a honey cruller for number 24.âÂ
As soon as I opened the bag, I felt regret for not ordering chicken pad thai from Pai through Ritual. But after I got a load of caffeine and sugar, I didnât care anymore. After all, I was trying to save money on lunch, and most of the times you get what you pay for. I kind of wish that the same goes for coding. So far, all my codes are acting like a wild horse.Â
Today, we learned about HTTP, sinatra, and how to work with erb(embedded ruby) file. Now I have some sort of idea of what the browser is wanting to say when it throws me those random number. Overall, today was more laid back. Iâm glad I can go home early and get some rest.
