Halfdan and Bjƶrn Ironside return from the Mediterranean with riches to spare after their pursuits following the dispersal of the Great Heathen Army on English soil. They bring spices and odd fruits and supple fabrics with craftsmanship, unlike anything youāve ever seen produced by northern needles and looms. But most surprising is the treasures Halfdan reveals in private. Necklaces of gold and rings of silver and iron adorned with blue, red, and green stones. Jewels fit for kings and their jarls but not for a simple seamstress married to the brother of a king. Halfdan drapes one of the gold necklaces over your head, watching the ruby pendant nestle between your breasts. You canāt help but laugh at the absurdity of it all, and though Halfdan shares in your laughter, he is quick to quiet you with a kiss before taking you to bed.
