He nods. âRight, yeah, that makes sense.â He pauses again, and then continues slowly, choosing his words carefully. âNimona, am I right in thinking the rabies symptoms are⊠interacting with your trauma responses?â
Nimona squints. The hand on her forehead moves up to comb through her hair. After a few moments, she pulls her other hand away from Ballisterâs to join it.
âI donât- maybe? But itâs not just- History repeats, Ballister. Things happen over and over.â
He doesnât reply for a long moment. Probably just shocked that she used his actual name.

Skye giggles, but doesnât say anything in reply. For a long few moments the two of them just lay side by side in the quiet and look up at the ceiling tiles.

âYour dad. The stuff I overhear, I think he cares about you a lot. My parents are overprotective sometimes and sometimes it gets on my nerves but itâs only because they care a lot. Itâs not their fault.â
Lydia continues to stare at the ceiling, thinking. Maybe itâs because of the late hour, maybe because sheâs already told this kid so much, but either way when the thought comes to her she admits, âI wish heâd say it more.â

âMy dad. I just⊠I wish heâd outright say that kinda thing, the âI love youâ type stuff. He did start saying it more while I was in the coma, but⊠Yâknow.â
