Jazziversaries June 19th
Billy Drummond (drums) - 1959 :: Happy birthday Billy Drummond! He moved to New York at the behest of Al Foster in 1986 and shortly thereafter joined the Blue Note band, Out of the Blue (OTB) with whom he recorded their last CD. He subsequently joined the Horace Silver sextet, with whom he toured extensively. He is currently a long-time member of Carla Bley's Lost Chords Quartet. He also leads a New York-based band called Freedom of Ideas.
Dave Lambert (vocal) - 1917- 1966 :: was an American jazz lyricist, singer, and an originator of vocalese. He was best known as a member of the trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Lambert spent a lifetime experimenting with the human voice, and expanding the possibilities of its use within jazz.
Ernest Ranglin (guitar) - 1932 :: Many happy returns to the Jamaican guitarist and composer. Best known for his session work at the famed Studio One, Ranglin helped give birth to the ska genre in the late 1950s. Some credit Ranglin with the invention of the core style of guitar play (sometimes known as "scratching") found in nearly all ska music. Ranglin played on many classic Jamaican recordings, performing with artists such as Theophilus Beckford, Jimmy Cliff, Monty Alexander, Prince Buster, The Skatalites, Bob Marley and Eric Dean's Orchestra. He has also explored other styles of music, notably blending jazz, mento and reggae.
Guy Lombardo (composer/conductor/leader) - 1902-1977 :: was a Canadian-American bandleader and violinist. Forming "The Royal Canadians" in 1924 with his brothers Carmen, Lebert, and Victor and other musicians from his hometown, Lombardo led the group to international success, billing themselves as creating "The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven." The Lombardos are believed to have sold between 100 and 300 million phonograph records during their lifetimes.
Hugo Alves (trumpet) - 1973 :: Birthday wishes to the rising star of Portuguese jazz, Hugo Alves! Hugos playing career started in 2000 when he joined the Almada Cool big band before moving on to play with the Ze Eduardo Unit. Currently Hugo is working with his own quartet around Portugal.
hey hey, Birthday cheer to the June 19 people. Have fun today and spread cheer through the year!
