#bird quest

Today was my first day of bird quest! I saw 12 different species, bringing me to 6% of the overall goal.

A little late, but yesterday was Day 3 of identifying 200 bird species in a year! Unfortunately yesterday was a slow day with only one new species, the Ruddy Turnstone. These small waders are one of my favourite species, and their sweet peeping calls makes the beach feel like home to me. This brings the total to 19 birds, or 9.5% completed!

I have also discovered that if I want to find these 200 birds, I'm going to have to get really good really quickly at identifying rare gulls, and also get really lucky with the distribution of rare and sparse migrants. Wish me luck!

Day 2 of identifying 200 of the 246 species of regularly occurring birds in the UK, and today brought 6 new species bringing the total to 18! Todays new species were the House Sparrow, Eurasian Starling, Feral Pigeon (the domesticated subspecies of the Rock Dove), Pied Wagtail (the yarelli subspecies of the White Wagtail), Blue Tit, and Black Headed Gull. This puts me at 9% of my goal. Although it seems that progress is going well, as I see more of the most common birds, new species will get less and less common so pulling ahead early is important. There will likely be little influxes during the Spring, Summer, and Autumn as new migrant species arrive, but many of Britains rarer birds will still prove difficult.
