Actress â "Bird Matrix"
Actressâs enigmatic sound becomes a bit more lively in âBird Matrix,â a track that includes plenty of beep boops and lush synths, as well as otherwordly piano samples. Thereâs almost a lo-fi, Boards of Canada vibe going on as well. Itâs not easy listening, but itâs worth the effort. âCinder
Recommendation: Rescue a parakeet from one of those awful glass bins at the pet store. Get him a tiny trenchcoat and pair of sunglasses. He is now the One.
New Track:Â âBird Matrixâ- Actress
Before his fascinating but extremely draining closing statement Ghettoville, Darren Cunningham was making some of the most gripping IDM music that the past five years had seen. Albums like Splazsh and R.I.P. were magnificent collections of repetitive but absolutely mouth-watering sound. If Ghettoville put him in danger of losing a bit of that flavor, âBird Matrixâ offers a glimmer of hope to put these worries to rest. It is a 13-minute monster of a track, which gives it plenty of time and space to collect all the typical Actress-isms and reignite them into one huge, rewarding tune. âBird Matrixâ is a more powerful standalone track than anything Actress has ever done. Perhaps its inclusion on a DJ Kicks compilation might have forced it to take a more club based approach, but that does not matter. It takes all the subtleties of Actressâs sound and puts them into something surprisingly fleshed out.
Now, form is never something Actress needed to have. In fact, a lot of his charm has always stemmed from an utter lack of logical structure. However, one must understand that âBird Matrixâ is only accessible by Actressâs standards. This isnât a track that loops a single beat until it sinks into oblivion; it is a track with a lingering background, a resemblance of a buildup, and a driving melody. It almost channels Fuck Buttons with its throbbing industrialism, but the barely-there bassline and persistence makes sure that this is 100% Actress. Itâs a step in a very interesting direction, and hopefully it indicates that Cunningham has not completely checked out yet. 8/10 Recommended Music
