This was from a ME3 only playthrough. When Kaidan starts out very unsure of Shepard. His dialogue after the coup was "It's not every day you go gun to gun with someone who used to have your back." and the conversation that usually triggers after Gellix just... didn't.
Anyway, just thought it was an interesting change from "something deeper with someone I already care about."

can appear standoffish but actually hyper-empathetic
constantly second-guessing how well he’s understood dialogue/if he’s reading you correctly
that pure sense of wonder of his
canonical difficulty socializing
responding seriously (and in a fair amount of detail) to vyrnnus’s introduction
holds back his feelings every bit as much as he holds back on his biotics in the beginning, likely subconsciously connecting the two
