Shadow was at his home, playing around with a chaos emerald. "Hmph. Nothing to do... again." He sighed. Almost as if on queue, the hedgehog's wrist started to beep.
"Agent Shadow here, over." "Shadow. The commander requests your immediate arrival at HQ. There's something he needs to discuss with you, over." A male voice responded. "Understood. Over and out." Shadow flicked his communicator off, and help up his chaos emerald. "Chaos Control!"
He ended up right in the commander's office. Standing next to Tower was a very familiar blue hedgehog.

"S-Sonic?" Shadow looked at the blue hedgehog’s lifeless body, his eyes wider than normal. He got down beside him, and gave it a shake. Nothing. The black hedgehog put his ear to Sonic’s chest; nothing still.
Shadow got himself up. “Y-you’re… dead…” He looked up into the sky, then back at his rival. The dark one couldn’t help but let a small tear escape his eye. He crossed his arms, and closed his eyes in silence. “… Sayōnara, old friend.”

Wait, what..? One moment he's pretty much guaranteed to die, there was no way he could dodge that.
So why was he still alive, twenty metres away from the fallen piece of debris? He coughed heavily, clearing dust from his lungs and forcing himself to sit up before he saw it. Blue, the same colour as his own quills, poking out from under the huge chunk of building.
