binding affinity (teaser) | non-established rxship | Ryland Grace x Reader on Erid [mdni]
putting my thoughts out once again in the ether (Tumblr) so i won't forget; a teaser for "binding affinity" which i plan to write into a more full-bodied work (check fanfic accountability list); canon divergent; this was written while i was half-asleep lol
ok i am stronger now and i'm back with MOAR binding affinity grace thoughts
so. imagine the first time reader goes for a swim without informing grace (he's still asleep) for the first time, thinking he wouldnt notice BUT he does because the bed is colder and lighter. grace panics and he rushes outside. he's so scared because he can't see you and the dome is so dimly lit since it's barely time for the simulated "dawn" to arrive. he literally SCREAMS for you to come back and he breaks down in tears, harder this time coz he's been crying since he realized you'd left. you swim back and he literally lunges at you to hug you and tell you to not do that again :(((
oh this fucked me up. what the fuck. are you in my walls? because i've been thinking about this scenario ever since i put out the teaser 😔 he'd be so terrified, oh bless him.
re: binding affinity AGAIN [mdni]
i do love the idea of non-sexual sexual touch between Grace and Reader while they're recovering on Erid. initially, that is. they're both still pretty avoidant of their true feelings, but being the only two humans on an alien planet, they agree on finding comfort in each other through any means necessary. it's consensual and it rests perfectly in that limbo of being almost lovers and friends. the sex is so close to being enough, but it's never really complete. you can't be totally honest because you two still have months worth of heavy trauma to process. it's physical comfort first before the emotional kind.
so when the experiment, as suggested by Adrian to their fellow Eridians, happens, it feels like a dam bursting into an angry flood. having been made familiar (again) with Grace's body, he and you fit into each other like a dovetail joint, but it feels much better; more pleasurable and satisfying because finally you're honest with each other. Grace has now retraced his way back to you and you've let him in at last.
it's why the experiment stretches on for so long. a win-win situation for the researchers and you. they get copious data and you get to be reunited with Grace. and he's ravenous. he's missed you dearly and he's beyond elated that you two are finally honest with each other. you can take your time. you can kiss as much as you want. fuck as long and as hard as your bodies will allow, until the point of near immobility. there's no need to worry about the ethics of exhausting and pushing the variables of the study, if you, the subjects, both decide on doing that yourself. Grace and you had never gotten the full taste of each other before. now it's different. after this, you two can make love like proper lovers and not let it be just for survival and mere relief.
the line "there are no straight lines [in the human body" from this teaser of binding affinity is from a gestural drawing class that i participated in all the way back in ninth grade. i used to be in an art club then, and we did those quick gestural drawing practices every once in a while. our club advisor used to say that a lot; that there shouldn't be any straight lines in our sketches because everything is curved in the body (yes, even the bones!) so it can hold weight. at fifteen that's like one of the most profound things you could ever hear (at least for me).

(more binding affinity thoughts because i just woke up and i feel sappy)
one of the factors that, i think, would lead to things being left unaddressed between you and Ryland on the Hail Mary is how emotionally sore and vulnerable the amnesia aspect makes you feel, because it's all one-sided. you remember everything. Ryland remembers close to nothing. it's all quite there but also nowhere at all. the flicker of a blurry face and a few flashes of familiar yet not-so familiar scenes in his head when he climbs further up that ladder to find your still-comatosed body and reads the name on the side of your bunk are almost nothing compared to the trove of memories that you have. but for the meantime, that's really all you have. it's all you're allowed to work with.
you wake up — groggy, disoriented, and so terribly weak — and Ryland is in tears because he's so happy that he isn't the only human alive on the ship. you can't even embrace him like you've known him for so long because from how he speaks, you glean that he doesn't remember anything before this. he says he doesn't know anything about the ship. he looks at you funny at first when you mention the protocol for turning on the centrifuge. but perhaps the most painful observation at all is one that he mentions in passing, like it didn't deserve any second thought or further examination from him, and it's that you remind him of someone that he doesn't quite know.
that's what triggers your own memories of how Stratt had Grace chased down and drugged like a mere animal who slipped away from its cage. Laika kicked and screamed and wept when they told her that she wasn't going to spend her last remaining years on Earth. that's what it looked like. and you were there. you built the ship with Komorov and Lokken. Grace had known you. he'd come to love you. that's why it hurt so much to turn your face away when he repeatedly demanded and shook you by the shoulders after he found out that you said yes to being sent to space, and not to him, like you two had planned, once all of this was over.
"my love for you means nothing if i don't go," is what you told him before everything went black and cold. those same words haunt you the entire time that you spend with Grace as you pilot the ship and navigate a new friendship with Rocky, one that, at the very least, offers you some sort of relief amid the bleakness of what once was between you and the other human inside this hunk of aluminum hurtling through space.
you build your own manageable hell to survive. you keep Grace at arms' length. you avoid every chance that might lead to a discussion about you two on Earth. if you do let something slip, you make sure that the memory is partial and impersonal. what matters most is succeeding in what you were sent here for. you couldn't afford to break Grace. you hadn't the luxury of crippling your past-lover-turned-crewmate and his mind because of some deep-seated memory that the amnestic is now concealing from him. like you said, your love for Grace will mean nothing if you don't protect him from the memory of it.
but Grace knows you aren't being truthful. he knows you're hiding something from him. he sees you looking away at the last second before he looks at you. the knife in his chest is driven deeper whenever you refuse to be alone with him; whenever you choose to sleep first so he nor Rocky can't quiz you about your own memories. the sting is much more painful as time goes on because his body remembers you best through touch — allowed only by accident — yet you actively deprive him of it. but Grace being Grace, he figures it out. he figures out that you're avoiding him for the sake of the greater good. he understands that there will be a time and place to process all of this. he just doesn't expect, however, for that to happen in slow, gradual successions, and on a planet sixteen lightyears away from the one where he first loved you. where you loved him first.
binding aff!grace crying the third time you kiss him is accurate honestly coz like he'd be so terrified of ruining the secret third thing you guys have... not lovers and not totally just friends because you sleep together and eat and you've probably compared your emaciated bodies while you were recovering on erid... not to mention that you'd be more vulnerable to the cold so you'd always be cuddled up to each other
grace thinks you're content w stuff BUT he's restless af because knows he loves you as more than a friend/crewmate. ok thats it if i say more i will start crying again
oh my god...
can you imagine — especially with the comparing bodies thing — like, touching each other's arm/side and feeling more and more flesh as time passes. your cheeks gain their curves again, and your spines/ribcages cease to poke through your skins whenever you breathe. Grace is so happy when he gets to see that you're recovering, and you're also happy that you're seeing him recover. as a form of celebration, you sleep in each other's arms; each time softer and more plush than the last. you try it without clothes once, just to really feel and ascertain that your bodies have enough fat and muscle again to leave indents and marks upon each other. Grace waits until you're fully asleep before he sobs quietly into your hair, because he's so happy, relieved, and thankful. in those moments, the highest form of intimacy that you share with Grace is being alive with him. Death has given you two a second chance, because he wants you to spend this reprieve loving Grace and being loved by him until your very last day. :)
can i just say that i'm SOOOO EXCITED for binding affinity?? like you got me from the teaser alone. i love the whole idea of human bodies being made to fit into each other and the wedding/marriage undertones of it all. lowkey to me it's a subtle foreshadowing of grace and reader getting married on erid bc they didn't get to do it on earth 🥹
i already started the draft today! i'm also quite excited to work on that, too :)
