Stories claiming that a new Canadian law lets the government remove a child from a family if the parents don’t accept the child’s gender identity have gone viral on US conservative websites. But the government says the reports are false.

Ontario's Bill 89 became law on June 1. The Supporting Children, Youth and Families Act is an update to the province's child welfare laws, including child protective services, foster care, and adoption.

One of the most noteworthy changes is around gender. Accommodating a child's gender identity or gender expression is now given the same protection as race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation, bringing it in line with the province's human rights code.

While the passage of Bill 89 received little attention from mainstream Canadian news outlets, it was big news on many conservative websites.

Some of the stories have described Bill 89 as a "totalitarian" law, suggesting that government agents will have the power to remove children from their homes for opposing "gender ideology," or that the bill was targeting Christian families in particular.

A story on the conservative news site Heat Street received more than 167,000 Facebook shares, comments, and reactions with the headline "Canada’s New Law Lets Government Take Children Away If Parents Don’t Accept Their Gender Identity."

The government of Ontario, however, says those stories are misleading.

"Bill 89 does not give the government power to seize children from families based on a parent that disagrees with a child’s gender identification. Any suggestion of the sort is false," Alicia Ali, a spokesperson for Michael Coteau, Ontario's Minister of Children and Youth Services, told BuzzFeed News in an email.

I have absolutely nothing against the LBGQ community, nothing at all, despite the fact that our beliefs may clash. I’m perfectly willing to make friends with someone who’s a member of the LBGQ community. I’d probably lay down my life for one (given we’d ever get into a situation that’d call for something like that).

But my liberal government just dove off the deep end and condemned thousands in my country. They passed a bill, Bill 89, that allows the government to come and take kids away from their families if the government feels that those kids aren’t being given enough of a chance to, basically, “discover their gender and/or sexuality”.

Canada has just entered the beginning stages of a terrible dystopia.

While Americans are flipping out about Trump creating some sort of dystopia, Canadians - especially Christian Canadians - are truly about to begin living it. We will not be able to breathe without risking our families being torn apart. We no longer are able to have free thoughts or free speech. 

I’m not making this up. There are several articles about this. Of course there are a ton that say “hooray!” for this bill, there are many that have been written by those that have seen the truth.

It is a huge bill that replaces the current Child and Family Services Act that has the entire framework for child protection in Ontario.  I don’t know a lot about it without reading it and it’s very big.

I can tell you that on a quick google - the big opposers to it are REAL women (anti-feminist, women-should-stay-in-kitchen, anti-gay group), and other opposition on “the gender agenda”. So it seems the far right is vocal in its disapproval which obviously doesn’t concern me.

This doesn’t really seem to have to do with LGBT protections at its core though (though I’m sure these silly groups are up in arms about that teeny aspect). It’s really more about the entire child protective services etc…And I don’t know anything really.
