If we all bring a reusable bag to the grocery store, thatโs a whole lot of plastic that wonโt end up in our seas. โป๏ธ Imagine if we plant one tree at time, we could eventually end up with a forest ๐ณ๐ณ๐ณ This photo was from a recent trip to the island of Bohol in the Philippines, taken at the man-made mahogany forest in Loboc. This beautiful 2-km forest is part of a reforestation project to address the devastating effects of deforestation due to โkaingin,โ which is slash-and-burn farming, a traditional method widely used in many parts of the world, including the Philippines. Whatโs striking about this forest is that it is eerily quiet, no birds, no insects, no tarsiers roam here. Why? Because in deciding which tree species to plant as part of their reforestation project 50 years ago, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) selected mahogany, which is a non-native species to the Philippines ๐ด The good thing is that folks have learned from this experience and there are a number of โrainforestationโ initiatives such as those led by @uplbofficial @earthdaynetwork @forestfoundationph and others.
