GoPro Hero 7 Review – Is This The Ultimate Action Camera?
It's only a relatively small step forward from its predecessor, but the Hero 7 Black's excellent video quality, stabilization, usability and range of mounts make it the best all-round action cam you can buy. What is the GoPro Hero 7 Black? The new flagship star of GoPro’s action camera range, the Hero 7 Black replaces 2017’s excellent Hero 6 Black. We described that camera as “the best action cam you can buy today” and the fundamentals here remain the same. The Hero 7 Black is a pocketable, waterproof 4K camera with class-leading electronic image stabilisation and a huge range of mounting accessories. Physically, it’s almost identical to its predecessor, with the only major differences being its new black paint job and a redesigned microphone for improved audio. There are, though, several new software-led features, including a boosted image stabilisation system called Hypersmooth (which GoPro calls the “best in-camera video stabilisation on any camera, ever”), a fancy timelapse effect called TimeWarp, and the ability to livestream videos to sites like Facebook via your smartphone. While a relatively minor upgrade, the Hero 7 Black pushes GoPro’s current design to the limit and retains the series’ place at the head of the action cam table.
The Hero 7 Black will look very familiar to anyone who’s used the last two flagship Hero models – perhaps too familiar, if you were hoping for a redesign. Still, at least GoPro has changed the colour this time, from the traditional grey to black for this flagship model. The only other major hardware change is a redesigned microphone membrane, which GoPro’s tweaked to improve overall sound quality (more on that later) and reduce vibration sounds from bone-shaking moments like mountain biking.
