Nick tipped his hat slightly, a grin forming, "never have I ever," a twinkle in his eyes as he looked at Ash.

As ever she was the light of his life, turning a dreary day into something to remember. He loved her with all of his heart, and felt he never told her enough. His grin dropping slightly, it being his only regret with Ashlyn.

"Truth fo' me," Luke chipped in raising his glass of liquor, noting that Nick was taking entirely too long staring into his.

His gut telling him something was up with Nick, he just had that look about him, that only Luke would recognise. On second thoughts, a quick glance at Ashlyn afforded assurances that it was not the case.

"How about you Ash?" he asked, giving Nick a quizzical look.

“Got anything on merrimen yet ”

Nick scratches his stubble turning to gus

“the guys have been keeping a close eye on him the last month since the night that armoured truck was stolen”

nick takes a wad of photos off gus examines each one till he flips to the last plastering a cocky smile on his face turning the photo to gus “thats the chick from the srip club id remember her face anywhere“

“Yea shes been round merrimen quite a bit lately, in-fact they have been seen together 24/7”.

Gus pulls out another handful of photos and throws them over to nick.

“merrimens been seen leaving her apartment 6 out of 7 days a week”

Nick grunts “not like merrimen to have a chick on his crew but saying that she is a feisty little thing maybe he likes being beaten up. ”

Nick lets out a little chuckle seemingly pleased with himself after the last comment.

“I dunno boss, but we do know she aint no average chick after the way she chucked you over her sholder”

Nick shoots gus a dirty look but guss just keep his normal composure generally intrigued by the black haired girl in the photos.

“there must be something, everyone else on his crew has a background with him bosco enson merrimen all ex military why would he bring someone in on whatever he’s up to with nothing to bring to the table”

Nick keeps staring at the picture of you both rubbing his thumb over your face “there must be something were just missing it.”

“not unless el jeffe has actually just fallen for the broad”

Nick shakes his head “no he wouldn’t get that involved with someone unless they had something he wanted hes to tactical for all that bullshit”

“Well boss every photo she’s smiling they look happy “

Nick felt slightly agitated by the fact that you did look so happy. he was going to find out who you where after that night but with his divorce in progress you’d had slipped his mind. yes you had pissed him off but he was slightly impressed.

Nick breathes in deep remembering the smell of your hair, he’d managed to rest his head in your hair when he had his forearm around your neck that night it smelt of honey.

Jealousy rose in the pit of his stomach realising that ray would have smelt the same smell by now.

He sat just staring at the picture for a moment before he cut your face out and went over the board with the rest of the crews faces and proceeded to sick your face above merrimens mugshot.

“He must not of shown his true colours yet but when he does i bet she comes running. Bet she doesn’t realise her boyfriend is a cop killer. What we got on her so far “

Gus starts tapping away on his computer and its not long before he has your life history up on screen.

“28 years of age, mother and father deceased. owns Tonys auto shop down south street was handed over to her after her father was shot in action when she was 16. father was in the marines, her mother died whilst giving birth to her she was raised by her father”

“That explains the tough as nails attitude bet daddy always wanted a boy”

“Got a few trophies in high school for kickboxing grade A student. After school seems like she went down hill hung around with the wrong people, got in fights ended up having run ins with the police”

“Let me guess her father was shot when she left school “

“Yep murdered on july 25 2006. first run in with the law September 4 2006 slap on the wrists for defacing a shop wall. gets gradually worse from there, spent numerous nights in cells for brawling with men and women”

“Daddy died so little girl went off the rails”

Nick walks over and leans down to the computer screen and sees your mug shot “shame.....such a pretty thing even in her god damn mugshot “

gus continues to read “ done for speeding an excess of 9 times,theft of a motor vehicle ended up cuffed to a hospital bed. traffic crew had to spike the tires to catch her resulting in her crashing the vehicle. she suffered multiple injuries but she managed to stay out of prison and ended up paying restitution to the owner, took a loan out on the garage to pay it off. Went quiet for a few years then in 2010 was arrested again for grand theft auto but ended up in-prisoned for 2 years released for good behaviour after that nothing she seemed to behave after that”

Nick smiles like hes won the lottery suddenly he’s able to fit all the puzzle together “merrimens using her to drive. Get me the speeds up”

nick grabs the mouse and flicks through the information “fastest speed recorded 175mph.”

“But how would merrimen know that”

“I dont know ive not worked that bit out yet”

“Could just be coincidence there’s millions of other felons with speeding tickets”

“Yea but not that fast”

Both men take a moment of silence to try and figure it out but have no luck.

“Do you want us to pick her up bring her in”

“Nahhh to obvious i wanna go see her I think with a bit of pressure rays little girl will crack, when she realises who ray really is shes sing like a canary and i wanna be there to listen”

“Gunna be hard to get her alone boss”

“Then lets make this interesting lets pay them both a visit. Make merrimen squirm”

“What about donny”

“Well leave donny for now let him start to feel comfortable, I’m more interested in her but if she wont spill we have him as canary number two”

"Can't blame you," Nick sighed, "life aint been easy, he continued, linking his hand with Ash's.

They'd come a long way since they first met, and for once Nick was comfortable being himself.

Wasteland Baby

Luke was just minutes away from Howe’s, Ash had just been taken by some gang. He had no chance at intervening it happened so fast, it’s like they’d been watched or something, ambushed.

His chest was heaving as he entered Howe’s, his legs burning, noting a door was ajar. After what he’d just witnessed, it was better to be safe than sorry, drawing his machete and approaching quietly. Noise could be heard from the room, it sounded like cutlery banging around.

“Fuck,” Nick howled, having tripped over a box, stubbing his toe on it, and almost dropping the cups he’d found.

Where was everyone anyway? Ash was normally right there waiting for him, especially if she knew he was on his way. It wasn’t like Luke to not be here either. Oh well, he’d make a cup of tea or coffee while he waited, not like he had much else to do.

A slight creak of the door sent chills down Nick’s spine, as he spun round to see who it was. A wide grin forming on his face as he saw it was Luke.

“Hey, want a drink?” Nick asked, before noticing Luke putting away his machete.

“No, no drink,” Luke answered, his voice nervous, a weak smile playing on his lips.

“What’s going on?” Nick asked, something was off, he could feel it.

“Where’s Ash?,” he asked, panic rising immediately as Luke simply looked to the ground.

“Where the fuck is she Luke?” he raged, stepping closer to his friend.

“She’s gone, somebody took her,” Luke confessed, the words spilling out just like that.

“And you didn’t do anything?” Nick screamed, “you fucking asshole,” he raged, pushing Luke back.

“I couldn’t do anything, we weren’t near each other,” Luke protested, “I knew I shouldn’t have let her go,” he despaired.

“She was picking flowers,” he said, “for you,” he added, knowing that it wouldn’t make a difference to how Nick felt. For once, Luke had failed Nick, and that just hurt to his very core.

Nick was aware that Alita was in the courtyard, but he was waiting to see her alone. He didn’t want anyone to overhear what he was about to say to the cyborg. She was the new kid in town, and Clementine had welcomed her, and for good reason. She seemed nice enough, and was friendly with the teenager, but Nick needed to talk to her alone.

He’d sat at the table, just watching the kids do their thing, and eventually it was just Alita and himself. He stood up and approached the cyborg, clearing his throat.

“Hi, Alita, I’m Nick,” he beamed, “you probably know that already,” he corrected himself. It’s not like Clementine hadn’t introduced Alita to everyone, but Nick hadn’t really spoke to her properly yet. His duties had prevented that luxury up until now.

He sat beside her, looking at the blade she carried, it was elegant, and clearly a dangerous weapon. It made him glad that Alita was a friend and not an enemy, as it was unlikely even Clementine could stand up to her.

“Listen, I need you to do me a favor,” he started, his eyes shining bright. It had been on his mind since Alita arrived, and honestly it brought some relief to his fears.

“I need you to protect Clementine, keep her safe,” he asked of the cyborg.

“She has enemies, she doesn’t know it yet, but they are out there, and they will come for her,” he explained.

“We can only do so much, but you?,” he gestured to Alita, “I’m glad you’re our friend,” he smiled, placing a hand on her shoulder.

He didn’t mean to put so much pressure on her, but he just needed to know that she had the same intentions as he did. He would die keeping her safe, hell, he would die for these kids now if he had to, even if it meant breaking his promise to Ashlyn.

Clementine was their future, he realized that when she made Ericson’s their home. The troubled youths, himself, Alita, Clementine, AJ all of them. 

“Please,” he begged.

Nick flinched if but for a second, well aware that he, nor anybody would be able to tell Clementine what to do. She’d grown up in this hellish landscape and finally made it to someplace she could call home.

“Come on, Clem,” Nick sighed, “I’ve seen how you look at them,” he started, a conversation he never ever envisioned having, more so when all hell broke loose.

She’d lost so many people, people she cared about dearly, and honestly Nick had no idea how she could still smile. Smile she did though, especially when she cast her gaze in their direction. He was only trying to offer guidance to the teenager, but honestly, Luke would have been way better at this. He felt awkward, as his life had always been a mess when it came to relationships, at least until Ash came along.

“I just don’t want you having your heart broken is all,” he said quietly, his smile turning to a frown. He knew just how it felt when things went wrong, and sometimes it was always going to happen; there’s things you just can’t control. This really was a lot harder than he thought. He’d never seen her so happy, but at the same time, he knew how it felt to have that happiness ripped away.

It’s not like Clementine hadn’t lost people she loved before, but this? It was a different kind of love, if he was right about his suspicions. He’d promised he would protect her, but how could he protect her from this? It’s not like he was her dad, and besides, she was more than capable of making decisions for herself, or she wouldn’t be here. Now he wished he hadn’t said anything, but he only had because he cared.

“Are you alright, Clem?” Nick asked, standing at the door. He’d heard her having another bad dream. AJ was already hugging her, a smile growing on Nick’s lips.

“Can we have a minute, AJ?” Nick asked the little one, his fingers tapping on the door a moment, before stepping into the room fully.

“Alright, I’ll go on patrol,” AJ, replied, taking his gun from the table and walking past Nick, pausing at the door, “take care of her,” he said to Nick, before leaving.

“Nightmares again, huh,” Nick said to Clementine, moving over to the end of the bed and sitting down.
